New Intel i7 980X Extreme Edition - Oh Yeah - I'm excited.

I love enthusiasts. They're the guys who end up selling gtx285s for r100 on Prophecy forums.

Actually I end up giving my "old" hardware to my fiance, which means she always has a pretty epic machine to play her games on. Then, with the hardware she doesn't need any longer, I usually end up flogging that at give-away prices OR give it to friends that need PC's.

I'm the same Neo, I have given away all my old hardware to family and friends, sometimes VERY capable complete gaming rigs.

The last rig I gave away to my brother was:
Coolermaster 850W Real Power Pro
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Core2 Extreme QX9775 3.2ghz (with a ThermalRight Ultra 120 extreme as I no longer needed it)
8GB DDR2 1066mhz (I can't remember right now, but I think they were OCZ)
ATI Sapphire 4870x2

I kept the chassis and sound card, so he had to do his own assembly.

Dude...that's an EPIC PC you gave away. Hmmm...I just really hope these new 6 core CPU's are worth it. It's one thing to spend money on something, it's another to WASTE that money.

The reason why I bought 2 X 5870s, and the reason why I spend absurd amounts of money on my computer is simple. It is my primary form of recreation at this point in time. You could say it's my work away from work. If you spend a lot of time with anything (be it your laptop, your car - if you deliver stuff), you want it to meet your needs exactly. To elaborate on the last point, I want to be able to sit down, pick up ANY game and never have a concern that I may have to adjust settings below maximum on a full HD resolution to increase the FPS above 60 or 100 (depending on the game). I like seeing all the cutting edge technologies at work, and I like being able to enable AA and AF, but I notice very quickly when the FPS of games isn't above 60 or 100. And it annoys me thoroughly when the game doesn't run smoothly with all details on max...

As to whether I'll buy this CPU, at this stage I don't have that amount of cash lying around. If I did, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to X58 and the cpu. Should I have enough money at some near-future point in time, I probably will upgrade...

My soulmate. lol

How can you resist a dinner and movie!?

hehe, ya spose if I had the cash I would throw it at this CPU and 4 GFX cards (ok maybe 2 seeing as 4 will just bottleneck). Luckily what I got now can play everything at top graphics on 1920x1080 - I play on my LCD TV thats why I don't care for any higher res at this stage ;)

It's quite interesting that you say "can play everything". I've found that the difference between playing a game at max detail, and playing a game smoothly at max detail is normally about R10 000 :p

Well the games I've played since getting the new rig,
Dirt 2 (obvioulsy since its free with the HD5870),
Fallout 3 (yup, playing it again now that there are tons of mods to add stuff improve things like texture quility)
Risen
Dragon Age (but gonna stop for now to wait for more mods)
and they run just fine at Ultra/Max/Whatever is highest (but at 1920x1080 res)

Still wanna get Mass Effect 2 but I guess it will be a breeze to run since the devs did not improve it too much from the console version.

I don't know, im still not convinced. Sounds like show boating more than anything else. I still do not understand why one needs to spend 15 grand on a CPU that will in time also become outdated for games that would run fine on anything slightly below that. It seems more like consumerism than anything else, and excessive consumerism at that.

Even if I was really wealthy, I would not spend more than 25 grand on a PC

Which is absolutely fine.

But it's still the difference between you and an enthusiast. Essentially, you spend money on what you're passionate about. I spend money on computers and cars, because I'm passionate about both of them. End of story, really.

Lol....I can pretty much guarantee I have the most expensive television out of all the forum members here, and that is by no means a good thing. It just shows that I've spent epic money on something other people won't even think of, like most enthusiasts do :)

Ag, I'd be too embarrassed to mention it. I think if people mention what they have bought, it amounts to bragging which is unpleasant. I think people should keep quiet about what they have. In my opinion. If people see it, no problem. But if you have to mention it and mention all the facts, its not something I would want to go around doing.

Im not saying enthusiats. They spend money on what they like. But I am talking more about general things

You've got a point that many people will view it as bragging, and unfortunately some people that do have LOADS of money (not me....:( ) like to rub their good fortune in other peoples faces. I on the other hand like to share my good fortune with others and when other people have stuff that I cannot afford, I'm genuinely happy for them! It all comes down to greed and jealousy. I do my best to avoid both so that it's never an issue in my life.

I'd love to drive an Aston Martin and I always give a thumbs-up when I see a guy in one. But I'm 100% happy in my VW Jetta :)
