Really? After the sh*t ending in ME3 they want to make another one? /sigh
I've said it before and I'll say it again, 3 games each with a 30 + hours of gameplay, each with alot of replay ability and people writing the entire series off because of an unpopular ending that lasted about 15 minutes, this seems really stupid too me.
Yes some of the 42% that actually finished the game didn't like the ending but that is no reason to scrap an amazing universe.
I am cautiously optimistic, the Mass Effect universe has alot of potential.

Hm I wonder when this one will be set? I for one wouldn't mind a completely new timeline. Maybe the future future?
Mass assassins creed !
They should just rename it to MILK EFFECT !!!
cause I have a feeling they're gonna milk the schitte out of the IP

Call of Mass Assassins?
I don't know what to think of this announcement so far. Mass Effect 3 definitely ended the "Shepherd Trilogy", we can't see Shepherd at all. If we do then I see this game flopping.
I agree with Omega though, the Mass Effect Universe has a lot of potential and a rich lore! Much like the Star Wars Universe, so there's definitely room for more games to take place in it. But another "galaxy ending" threat just wouldn't work. Another Mass Effect would have to be smaller in scope.
So if done right, a new Mass Effect can be awesome!
But if ME3 (And I'm not just judging by the ending, I'm talking about the experience as a whole) the series has hit a low. So I'll hang onto my reservations.

I don't think it necessarily has to be set pre-Shepherd or during the events of the Reaper invasion but just from a different perspective. I think a new installment could very well work post Reapers.
Depending on player choices, there could be a very big Krogan problem! I definitely see some from of inter-galactic travel without the Mass Relays, the Crucible is floating in Earth's orbit. It's Prothean technology. So I definitely think that's a possibility.
So yeah, I think Mass Effect could definitely work after the events of the Reaper invasion.

Yeah but which ending do you use? Also there is a pretty massive difference in the endings, in terms of what happens. As they would need to make 3 vastly different games to account for the 3 endings. Without the mass relays cross galaxy travel is impossible so they would have to reduce the size of the map to only include the solar system you are in and those immediately around it.
The only ways around the ME3 endings is a retcon or choosing the most likely ending (Destruction) and using it as cannon which would defectively reduce the idea of player choice to an even larger joke all of which would infuriate the remaining loyal fans like me. It has to be set before the ME3 endings or... several thousand years later but that would still leave you with the different endings to contend with.
All the endings (Except for the ending where Shepherd does nothing, but I highly doubt BioWare would take that one into account.) have one thing in common, Shepherd dies saving the Universe and his crew survives. So if you were to create a new game, you wouldn't have to take over you choices from ME3. What BioWare could do is have the new ME game read your save file and see what your Shepherd chose at the end of ME3, and then that would influence certain conversations and general lore going forward. Much like what they did with the Dark Horse comic at the beginning on ME2 on the PS3.
So the ending of ME3 would play a minimal role really, and it would leave room for BioWare to create a new story in the same Universe with a new hero without milking the Reapers.

The problem with setting it after 3 is they are inevitably going to piss some fans off. There's not really any way around it. Setting it before the events of the trilogy, or even making it completely unrelated to the trilogy is the easiest way to avoid that. Imagine a game chronicling humanity's initial discovery of the mass effect relay and thus their first contact with the other intergalactic species and the fights surrounding it.
Except, Bioware likely won't be allowed to do something like that. EA would never allow it. If you're not dealing with a world/galaxy ending threat, EA probably won't care.
Synergy ending complete re-wires all biological life in the Galaxy. Destruction Destroys all artificial life, Control has the reapers remaining around under the control of Shep. The difference in the setting, tone, "feel" of any post ME3 setting is too great. Like I said you would have to make 3 different games to account for all of this and then put enough similarities in it that it would allow for Multiple path, multi character progression not to mention building a single story that would fit in any of the 3 different post ME3 scenarios would be a nigh insurmountable challenge. It simply isn't feasible from a development stand point IMO.
I think Graal's idea of setting it during/around the first contact war would be interesting.
A game set during Humanity's discovery of alien races would definitely be a good setting, the only problem is nothing exciting happens during that time.
All the history on that moment that you can read in-game suggest it was generally a peaceful discovery. I'm sure that there were certain "black op" missions conducted by Humanity during that time, that could be the focus for a new game, but I think it would just be too small for the ME IP.
