New NCSoft MMO - Wildstar

A similar discussion on the WildStar forums escalated so quickly that it had to be locked by a Carbine employee after folks started comparing the Dominion to "Nazis" and "white South Africans during Apartheid". I think one needs to remain light-hearted and detached regarding in-game factions. In a war between nations there is always a winner, and a loser. The winner is always deemed "evil" by the opposing faction. The Japanese were "evil" at Pearl Harbour. The Americans were "evil" at Hiroshima. 3,000 casualties at the alleged hands of Al Qaeda on 9/11, Iraq death toll 500,000+ since start of U.S.-Led Invasion. Who is more "evil", Jerusalem or Palestine? The guys who won The Battle of Isandlwana, who were then defeated at Blood River by the guys who were defeated during the Second Boer War? I'm not trying to be offensive or controversial, merely trying to demonstrate that each nation has it's warriors who fight for what they believe to be right, and I s'pose the Dominion are no different! Throw in a decent-sized helping of snarky sarcasm and a disdain for hillbillies and that's basically the Dominion in a nutshell! :D

P.S. A Psyblade to the face is the new arrow to the knee!

Truer words, QFTFT, etc.

PS: Hippies are evil.

The Exiles are not all that good to be honest, did a quest where I had to torture local sentients with various devices, yuck.

Had the day off to play with friends and what a frustrating experience that was. This is yet ANOTHER MMO that does not give you any incentive to group up with friends. Questing suffers from the same issues as ESO in that regard. We finally did the level 20 dungeons, was an amazing amount of fun.... for the first time. There is almost no incentive to do it again, ever. The loot was crap, the crafted items we made before going in in preparation was only marginally outclassed by the loot that dropped AND loot for classes dropped that were not in our group and the loot is SOULBOUND, cant give it to alts etc.

The only reason to suffer through the advanced difficulty of the dungeons again is to get some renown and maybe a housing item, yeay.

Look, the mechanics are great, the encounters a large amount of fun, once. Don't get me wrong.

But there is just no reason to do it again. I was hoping for something like the way you could purely level doing dungeons in WoW, get cash, some loot etc. Here you quickly get poorer as you pay for repair costs. Each dungeon got us about 50% xp in a level at 20, so for 5 hours of doing dungeons we barely got a level. Yeah sure, once you know it, you can do it faster, but still, I can get 2 levels in an hour of questing.

We then moved on to adventures to see how that works. Much easier, much quicker, also more boring. Got more xp, more renown and spent less money on repairs since no one died. Downside? Well it is limited and even though you have different options, you are going to be doing the same thing again at some point. Adventures are a much better option for group play. Here is the big downside of adventures: if you are level 20 (4 people) and you go into an adventure with 1 PUG who is at level 15, you scale down to 15. Not a bad idea BUT the loot is level 15 as well....

So we all took the day off to do the dungeons once, do adventures and then realised... what now? How do we play 4 people together from here on out? Answer, we try and quest, if one person drops, we all stop and play another character.

I actually wonder why they don't design this kind of game with a button that says: Push here to be max level and play the "real game" and another that says: Push here if you want to play a solo game and quest to max level.

Such a pity. Still, we enjoy the game, just finding it really hard to play it as a group and not be frustrated which I find really ironic since it is labelled as an "MMO".

Wouldn't it be so very nice if you could just join friends who are questing, get their quests shared with you, even though you have done them already, help them out, get some xp/items/currency yourself while scaled down to them? Why can no other MMO get this right except City of Heroes and GW2?

Ergh, the genre is really frustrating me at the moment.

Maybe it's time to call it quits, clearly MMO's are not giving you what you expect.

Still love the genre, just worried about the direction it is taking. This is now the second new AAA MMO that is lacking in non-max level grouping technology that older games like GW2 got right.

Different strokes. I usually play solo up to max level only grouping for dungeons, pvp, etc. Other people slow me down and annoy me. So to me this isn't a problem, but I can see how the more "social" people would find it discouraging.

Edit: I've played this way since my first MMO, maybe because I was used to playing single player games and waiting for someone else to finish a quest when I'm done gives me a feeling similar to road rage. So when I say "social" I don't mean "FILTHY CASUAL", I mean someone who can actually be around other people without them wanting to kill you or you them. I enjoy the leveling experience for the lore and seeing the world (which I don't need other people to enjoy) and I enjoy max level for end game content. It's like having 2 games in one.

I don't think it's selling itself as a casual, PvE social game though, Shrike. Which was the only thing GW2 actually had going for it. It's modelling itself more after older MMOS like WoW, where questing was merely a "nice to have" and the focus was on endgame. In fact, Carbine had to nerf the levelling curve because social players were complaining that the process was too difficult (please note I use the word "social" with the utmost respect). Bear in mind that we're a day from launch. I'm sure that, like WoW, the game will improve and evolve once they receive feedback from the community. Many players did not take the opportunity to play the BETA (when they really should have) and were not able to give Carbine the insight they required to provide the more social players with a gratifying levelling experience. The only folks I saw ravenously chewing up Twitter and the community sites were raiders.

Shoot an Aurin. Stop the cuteness and hippyness from infecting your children.

You make a lot of sense, the social aspect in modern MMOs seem to happen at max level, raiding and such.

Whoo, the SS brings back memories of my first hunter in vanilla wow. Kiting elites like a champ. Just a pity i get lag "hiccups" every now and then which costs me a gy run.

Mmm, Tiptoppoet has made me rethink my opinion, together with Isengard's comment. It is all about expectations, which I should temper and just enjoy what I do enjoy.

Thanks for the clarity!

LOL Shrike, I like the housing as well but the rocket ship freaks me out - I feel claustraphobic in it.

I would like it more if the roommate option actually worked, where you can decorate your alts plots. That way I can build one plot for all my characters.

Hahahahahaha Shadow I will give you a 7day pass if you like ?? :P

Nah - I'd have to redownload it, and I honestly can't spend more than an hour at a time in that game.

I might be able to stretch it to two hours if I know I'm annoying someone :p
