New Rig Time

So after all the years of having PC's that just cut it by having to sacrifice resolution and quality settings to get games to run smoothly, I've decided to build a rig that will be able to handle current games using good settings (hopefully). Admittedly I have been out of the PC gaming world for a while so it has been a rather interesting task to go through what is currently available and to decide on which components to get.

So far I've come up with the following rig (baring in mind that I'm not too interested in OC but am open to suggestions):

Intel Core i5 4460 - 3.20GHz Quad Core, Socket 1150
MSI Intel Z97 SLI Krait Z97
G.SKILL Sniper, 8GB Kit, DDR3-1600, CL9, Black OR Corsair Vengeance Pro, 8GB Kit, DDR3-1600, CL9, Black
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 760, 2GB, DDR5, PCI-Express 3.0
SAMSUNG 840 EVO-SERIES 250GB 2.5" SATA III Solid State Drive
Corsair VS, 550
Corsair Carbide SPEC-03, Midi Tower, Windowed

I have an existing 1TB HDD that I'll be adding to the mix as well as a Dell s2340L monitor. Over the course of the next year I'd like to increase the RAM to 16/32GB for the purpose of running VMs (for work/training) but 8GB is enough for now and will also add a second Dell monitor. If needed later down the line I'll add another GTX 760 which is why I went for the SLI Krait.

What are your thoughts and opinions on the above? I'm open to any suggestions.

How this the Vram situation look when doing Sli?
If you go Sli it's so that you can max everything out, the problem though is with the newer games is they will eat up the Vram, thus rendering the point of going Sli useless if the cards only have 2Gb

Budget is 12K tops I'd say.

Is there any functional reason for going for that case? The reason I ask is purely because I'm not worried about how it looks. As long as it has the beef inside it's all good.

The RAM looks like a choice thanks!

The Z97 Gaming 3 was my original mobo choice but the SLI Krait has 2x PCIe 3.0 whereas the Gaming 3 has 1x PCIe 3.0 and 1x 2.0 so I'm not sure how that affects the future plans for SLI? The Krait is also a bit cheaper than the Gaming 3.

Would the difference between the GTX 760 and the 770 be worth the R500 price difference if you know what I mean? I see there is quite a difference in the clock speeds but I'm not too clued up on the difference that would make in terms of game settings?

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it as this is an area I'm new in.

From My experiance by the time your system needs SLI to keep up other better cards have been launched, SLI when you build or within 3-6 months or don't at all.

The new GTX970 class is R5000 for an entry level 4Gig.

GTX970

Quick tip to get performance idea.
Type in "GTX 770 passmark" in google. Whatever the name of your graphics card is.

Just to go with what Glordit said, running two GTX 760 in SLI now, you'd get stuck with 2Gb vram, and relative the same performance of the GTX 970 singl card, and for R3000 more...

Might of been worth it then, but not now.

Ah right I'm with you guys. I haven't looked into the SLI side much so wasn't aware of that side. As much as I would like to get the GTX 970, it will push the price up a bit too much at moment without sacrificing something. Decisions decisions. Could always lose the SSD for a little while if it's better to put a better GPU in. I see there are some specials popping out like the MSI GTX 970 Gaming from Pinnacle for R4895 and one from Omega for R3599 but that's a Gainward. Never heard of them.

R3600??? That's an incredible price for a 970. Gainward have been in the game for many many years, so they can't be that bad.

Don't sacrifice the SSD, seriously. It makes the most noticeable difference in general use on the PC. It even alleviates level loading times if you install a game on the drive.

Gainward is the EU version of Palit Microsystems, whom have been around since the 80's. 100% legit, and great quality products.

SSD you can get any time though. The graphics card is a commitment.
Graphics card also gives you a working PC, so the waiting for a SSD gonna be much easier, and it's a super easy upgrade.
The worst that can happen is, the SSD will be even cheaper a month from now.

Speaking of Price:

Somewhat gonna have to elaborate which is better:
R1500 (250GB sold state drive)

Personal preference, no use getting all the nice new toys but the case looks plasticy and cheap.

Plus it's a bit roomier, has the side fan mounts and gives you a bit more room for expansion in the future. The spec 3 looks good but I think the 300r might give you more room in the future.

I think your other questions have been answered though.

Yes they have been answered so thanks all for the input!

Going to sit this evening and update the build and see what it comes to with the changes but will most likely drop the SSD for the next month or 2 and go with the GTX 970.

Waiting to find out more regarding the Gainward from Omega as the stock is limited to 120 units but I'm assuming that's the supplier price to resellers considering Omega is an importer. Will update as soon as I get more info.

Omega does not sell to the public.
