No Man's Sky

As with most games with a lot of freedom, like Skyrim etc I am holding off to the last to follow any story line. The problem I am encountering is that I cannot reach different class planets, I guess I need to upgrade my warp drive to reach them.

indeed. I got to a point where I couldn't jump to the next system without a warp drive. I now have 3 strapped together :D

So, No Mans Sky has provided me with some incredible experiences over the weekend. Here are some of the highlights I had:

I am following the Path of the Atlas, and as I was warping into a new system, I came across a huge battle going on between pirates and the freighter fleet. Was a great site to behold, but I got blasted out of the sky as I haven't focused so much on upgrading my ship for combat.

I read somewhere that there are different classes of systems that can only be reached by upgrading your warp drive. So I hunted for the resources required, upgraded my warp drive, and went to one of these other classes of systems. It's amazing to see that things do get different on these planets. Plus you get a ton of rare trade resources which you can sell for a huge profit.

I got hunted and stalked by some very aggressive animals on a planet I landed for a refuel. I thought that predators hunt alone. Not this time. There was a pack of about 4 of these creatures that looked like cow sized wild boars. It was super scary, and also very entertaining to play through.

I found out that any planet can theoretically be destroyed. I tried out some grenades, and those bastards creates huge craters when on every surface they are shot at. They are deadly for the Sentinals that don't stand a chance now against me, and any time I get stuck in a cave, I can merely just shoot a giant hole out of it and continue on with exploring

Now those kind of experiences are what make me interested in this game. Although, I have found with these open-world, exploration/survival games I seem to enjoy reading the stories of others playing more than actually playing the game myself (e.g. DayZ)

It is true. Games like this all live and die by the stories people can tell about it. I love creating my own stories while playing and completely living in the game. I think it's why I love NMS so much. I'll make sure to share more stories with the forum

Apparently this is a good alternative to No Man's Sky for people who are looking for something similar:

There are actually a whole host of alternatives to NMS that people can play:

In my story I am a part time scholar of the Sentinels, scrabbling around looking for clues about them and avoiding shooting them totally. I have to shoot hostile fauna and run like hell so that I don't get caught. When I break open a door I do it quickly and hide and then come back when the sentinels calm down.

I really don't want to piss them off.....

Such an interesting story indeed. You'll struggle with some planets with high levels of trade resources like Gravitino balls, as the moment you pick up one of those, you immediately get a 3 star level and elite sentinel units are dispatched.

Oh no. Looks like I will have to experiment with their aggro levels, ranges and how well I can hide and do stuff with them around and coming after me. All part of the compilation of the Sentinel Codex I guess ;-)

Easy to get away from them... find a cave or simply melee-boost away and over the nearest hill.

The sentinels are difficult to place, and some planets they are just so aggressive that you cannot roam around unmolested. I myself have found friendship in the Vy'keen, and I love learning about their culture and lore. A race of highly aggressive warriors, ready for combat and constantly at war with the Sentinels. They respond well to violence and acts of strength. Their language is full of strong combative words, and their focus is always on conquest. But, they harbour a secret tie to the Atlas. A tie I have yet to discover. Each Atlas station I've been at has taught me many new Vy'keen words, indicating some form of bond between them. I don't know yet what or why, but I'm sure that my path of the Atlas will reveal more as I progress.

I only have met a strange race called the Korvax. I am not a fan of them, too diplomatic for my liking, although they don't seem to mind jabbing me with needles and watching my reaction, don't like that either.

This one Vy'keen grunt wanted to interrogate me for information by also jamming a needle into my arm. I had the option of pulling rank and reporting him to his superiors. He quickly changed his tune and rather gave me a Warp Drive Tao upgrade I so desperately wanted.

I've met the Korvax. They are so eager to learn and study that I cannot trust them. They will abandon any and all rules just to get more knowledge. Or at least that's the feeling I got from our brief encounter. But then again, at first I wasn't a fan of the Vy'keen as well. Only after getting to know them better have I started trusting them more. Maybe I should give the Korvax the benefit of the doubt as well

yeah when I'm out mining in a hazardous environment and my ship is too far away I just make a cave to take shelter in :D

Just don't piss them off in space.....

I am a scholar of all three races, but the Gek are my favourite.

And I discovered yesterday that there is a 4th language you learn. It seems it's always been there and I never noticed it.... or I only started learning it once I completed my Atlas Path.....

NMS...A shallow and repetitive experience at it's best.

1st of all the visuals...Looks nothing and I mean nothing like the game we saw at E3 (Although not really surprised, seeing as this is standard practice these days).

The alien/animal looking things, look nothing like the footage we saw at E3, in fact they pretty much look like a collection of community created Spore characters that were randomly thrown together.

On the surface most planets look different, but after spending an extended amount of time exploring a ton of them, you do end up running into similar looking planets and some pretty much identical.

The sentinel bullshit...They offer little to no resistance in combat and are easily dealt with. Which is why I am 27 hours in with 300m credits, a 48 slot suit and 48 slot "spaceship".

Pirates...In the beginning they are rather annoying and did end up killing me twice...but after getting some upgrades I dealt with them fairly easily. I did encounter a huge swarm of them that did give me a run for my money, but I still killed them all and all it cost me was a single shield recharge.

Exploration...Although super exciting when just starting out, after 20 hours of doing the same thing on every single planet, with the same elements and rare items, same buildings (Some of them are slightly changed later on but nothing special or anything to get excited about).

"Space ships" Mmmmm Most of them are ugly as sin and poorly thought out, there are no customization options. Ship variety is also shit...I think I saw one out of the lot that was worth looking at...lol

No multiplayer

No alien npc altercations or fights (No physical battles with any of the alien species you meet up with, only visible threats (I use this word lightly) are the space pirates.

Tons of missing features and content

Once you have a reasonable amount of upgrades the game is a cake walk. No seriously, a piece of spar chocolate cake could do what we do in this game...

Now I know some people are gonna come in screaming and shouting..I expected to much, The team behind the game is small (Only 15 people), The game wasn't over-hyped, Sean Murray isn't a fucking liar and a con artist....

4/10

You are correct in your summation of the game. I think this is the general population's feeling about the game. Yet I still love it and can't wait to play it after 30 hours myself. Why this was ever marketed on the level of AAA title is beyond me, as this is a very niche game for only a very niche market of gamers. I happen to fall in that niche sector, which is why I love the game to bits. But then again I am a guy that dislikes Ark, and dislikes Overwatch, two games that a much bigger portion of people love and support. Objectively those are better games, but for me they are no where near as enjoyable as NMS.
