Openweb launches 384 uncapped ADSL gaming package

384 uncapped is like saying you can have a bottomless coke but it only comes out a drip at a time.

Its actually embarrassing to see the state of our broadband in SA not to mention what we pay.

Also don't get how you can "prioritize" gaming on a 384 line. Slow is slow. The end.

If you have a game only needing 10kb's and zero updates it would work. Patching 1G still takes ages

Yeah I think that is the annoying part. Latest and greatest games are getting increasingly more reliant on massive patches.

SA seriously needs to move into the 21st century both on the speed and price front.

I have no problems gaming on my 384k.
Patches generally don't take very long. Mostly I do updates overnight when I'm sleeping.
Yes, sometimes this means I can't play for 1 night; but really, if your world revolves around playing your games RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW OR THE BUNNY GETS IT - you sure are one sad individual.

PS: No bunnies were harmed during the creation of this post.

Once you run a 1Mb or 4Mb line, 384k feels shit and I am sorry but Grim has a point, we pay shit loads for our net. Don't go defending the idiots that are overcharging us for our broadband:mad:

Not a bad price but wish they would bring out a 4 meg uncapped for under R400 without throttling or shaping on torrents.

I know when I use my friends 384k line to get updates for their pc it feels like crap after using 4mb for years.

Also I am part owner of a Online game, and the players think it is incredibly rediculous to pay what we pay for our shitty internet, they laugh when I mention we just recently cracked the 10mb line..They think its daft and I have to agree with them, Kinda off topic but we get ripped off by the broadband suppliers in SA.

Unfortunately one cant separate "gaming" and "downloading" in a world where many online games (if not all) , get patches ranging between 200mb and 1 gig , every second week of the month.
(And I pity the fool who is only starting to play a game where he has 10 gig + of patches to download (*cough* world of warcraft *cough*)
I wish we weren't expected to be satisfied with the scraps of bandwidth offerings we are getting..
384kbps is not a gaming connection , It might have been in 1998 , but im afraid we are in dire need for better priced bandwidth and I wish telkom's land line monopoly would come to a end. (Until such time I doubt we will see any decently priced bandwidth at good speeds (512kbps minimum))

I can attest to this, upgraded to 1mb about 2 months ago and I just can't go back... :(

When I use to play wow with a 5 gig cap I use to download the patches at end of month when telkoms capping broke and became uncapped lol.

Seriously 384 gaming dedicated? lol?

What irks me is that there is even a better version of this product, then why release this one in the first place as stated "prioritized"; clearly not if there is a next level:
OpenWeb founder Keoma Wright explained that the service is only available on 384kbps and on a standard uncapped account, but there are plans to introduce a gold version in future.

RSA must be one of the few if not the only place where you can get 20-ka-trillian versions of something

I doubt that that line can decently support more than one user, not everyone is live-at-mons, well I hope so.

why can't we have prioritized gaming traffic a norm?

I upgraded to a 1meg line purely because my gaming and VoiP was not working well. I would be willing to try a 384 line which prioritises gaming and Voip.

Some games struggle on 384k, not because of latency, just because the line gets too congested. As an example its become impossible for those on 384k to do 25 man Cataclysm raids, pretty much put an end to guild progression right there.

Its going to get worse in the next two years. I suspect few if any new games will be playable on 384k.
