OpenWeb launches gaming-focused uncapped ADSL

Isn't that the case with most ISP's though blaai?
Kinda why I'm paying the extra for capped ADSL. Unshaped, unthrottled, 24/7.

Do not fall for any marketing schemes from OW. Their accounts are terrible all around. If you enjoy contacting support once a week to supply you with new account details to "fix" your speeds that just became excruciatingly slow for no reason then go right ahead.

Funny, I've been with them for years and one of the best I've experienced.

You probably have a business account? Most I've seen with issues are people with non-business accounts. I moved over to Web Africa from OW and the service I get is like night and day...

I've tried a lot of their accounts to be honest, for personal reasons (mostly financial), none of which have been business.

You've been lucky then. Myself and a colleague were both having the same issues and eventually just gave up. Weekly support requests are no fun at all.

I know OW's uncapped products have a reputation for terrible speeds during the day. The other ISP's are slightly better.

I'm also on a capped account, much better indeed

Urgh, can't someone please just create a damn capped account, but have Steam, XB Live, Origin, battle.net and PSN not count towards the cap? Seriously, it cannot be that hard. That is what I really want, because every damn uncapped account tends to be shaped and throttled to death and the capped accounts get chowed up quickly due to gaming downloads, updates and just general gaming.

Especially when PS4 and XBO games are <50GB a pop.

Surely these different services use different protocols eh. You'd think it'd be simple.

I used OW for years without issue. Only reason I switched is because I started using my free uncapped account from FNB. If the FNB account gave me any issues and had to go back to a paid account, I would go for one of these packages.

not really, it will have to be done on the destination IP address or range and the TCP/UDP ports (all is relatively well documented)

The funny thing is, when you dress a piece of k@k up real nice, at the end of the day it's still a piece of k@k.

Actually it is pretty hard. Eg steam runs on port 80... Same as Websites. And the destination IP is dynamically selected based on location per CDN. As if that was not enough they're using AWS as well - which again is used for many websites. You can try some packet inspection stuff but frankly I doubt it's worth it.

The closest you can get is filtering the SA mirrors but that only covers 90 percent of the cases so you'll have someone whining about their cap disappearing. Usual in the form of a very angry very public thread filled with ignorance.

Steam Client
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive (Game client traffic)
UDP 27015 to 27030 inclusive (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV)
TCP 27014 to 27050 inclusive (Steam downloads)
UDP 27031 and 27036 (incoming, for In-Home Streaming)
TCP 27036 and 27037 (incoming, for In-Home Streaming)
UDP 4380

Steamworks P2P Networking and Steam Voice Chat
UDP 3478 (Outbound)
UDP 4379 (Outbound)
UDP 4380 (Outbound)

Ports required for Steam can not be re-mapped to HTTP or reconfigured to a custom port range.

Oh, and IS and MWEB host the steam servers in South Africa, and they use regional based ISPs not AWS to host their services. As I said, all is very well documented.

These packages don't seem to include line rental

In order to use any of our ADSL packages you will need to lease an ADSL line from Telkom
http://openweb.co.za/home-uncapped-premium/

So take eg a 4Mbps account, you'll still have to pay Telkom R299 for the line, so it would cost you R788.

I have a 4Mbps business uncapped account from Afrihost, which costs R797 per month, and is uncapped and unshaped all the time...

And so went another awesome experience with OpenWeb. Leon and the team are great! I really enjoy working with them and get the impression they would almost bend over backwards to assist. Nothing but good things to say about OW.

You're definitely one of the lucky ones. I always got the impression that they were talking down to me when my account was having issues. Just take a look at this thread.
