Path of Exile

Yeah you can buy cosmetic stuff to make your characters and weapons and spells look pretty. Nothing that influences gameplay.

So it's basically like LoL. I'm quite tempted to get this game. Think it's time to visit my brother with uncapped again"whistling:

If you are only talking about the micro-transactions sure, otherwise it's much closer to Diablo or Torchlight.

Yes, was referring to the micro-transactions only.

I'm really keen on trying a decent Diablo II game again!
Titan Quest didn't really catch my attention. Torchlight 2 was fun, but I felt it's item repertoire was a bit limited. I might be wrong:eek:

Never the less, account created! Now just need to download the game:)

I've got over a hundred hours play-time in Torchlight II, and I'm still having a blast. There are also several mods available these days which add new classes and tons of new items. Have you tried the map-room yet?

Then you've got far more hours than me!
I haven't tried any mods though, not on uncapped connection :(
The map-room is the room where you can buy maps and play them? Yes, but I haven't completed it yet.

To keep this post on topic:

How long is Path of Exile? And how's the replay-ability?

I've played several hours and haven't even completed act I yet, so quite long I'd say. I would also say that the replay-ability is very high because the characters differ tremendously and your 'class' essentially only defines your starting location on the skills galaxy.

Revisited TL2 and while it is fun I want something new. So how does this actually compare to TL2?

Path of Exile feels very much like Diablo 2 imho, almost identical. Except it is entirely online, like an MMO. So you see other playes in the shared areas, and then go off into your own world sections. I did not notice any "random area generation" though, i did a few zones with a few classes and they were identical, but the game seems fairly large.

Either way, if Exile isn't doing it for you, i guess you can always go for Marvel Heroes (also Free2Play) , which was created by David Brevik, who was the Cofounder of Blizzard-North (and the Diablo Franchise, before Diablo 3). Brevik was also the guy who had this rather scathing interview where he went all out against Diablo 3 and how "He" would have done it were he still there, so it remains to be seen if he did it in Marvel Heroes. I played the Beta, and yes, it is an Action-RPG with MMO'y elements.

If you haven't read that interview:
http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/co...vid-brevik-discusses-his-feelings-on-diablo-3
IncGamers: Do you think they bought the wrong people in? As we understand, Jay Wilson, for example, his background was RTS. From our point of view it looked like they misunderstood what kept people playing, The type of loot drops, which has been a big issues. One of the other issues is they have not listened to their community, and they have not analysed what makes up that addictive Diablo experience. What are your thoughts on that?

David Brevik: Well, the loot system. They made some decisions with the loot system that were very different than the way that we did it in Diablo 2 and I think that obviously the community has been upset with some of the decisions they made. Having all of your powers work off your main weapon and things like that, to having blues that are more powerful than yellows. Eventually the auction house and how that worked, even something as simple as when you equip an item and it’s bound to your character permanently would have totally changed the dynamic of the game.

It seems odd that they have not really responded in a quick fashion to some of these things. I think they are very well aware of the problems at this point and are trying to fix some of this stuff. It’s a shame that they had to learn some of these painful lessons

..
IncGamers: As you created Diablo, how do you feel about it? Do you feel a little let down that the legacy has kind of been mashed up?

David Brevik: I have very mixed emotions about it (laughs). On one hand I am sad that people haven’t enjoyed Diablo because it’s a love, a passion, and its obvious people still have a giant love and passion for Diablo and they are speaking out about it because they have such love for it. That makes me feel great.

I am sad because people are outraged and, you know, some of the decision they have made are not the decisions I would make and there have been changes in philosophy and that hasn’t gone over very well. I think in that way I am a little sad.

I am also a little happy, which I hate to say, it shows that the people that were involved in Diablo really did matter, and so I am happy that it has come to light that how talented that group was and how unique and special that group was. I am hoping that, as this happens very often in the industry, you see it with Call of Duty and things like that , when the people leave the game changes and it shows how critical people are in this industry.

There are definitely randomly generated areas in the game, in fact one thing that can get a bit annoying in this came is that if you leave an area for more than 15 minutes it gets regenerated and you have to explore it all over again to find exits and waypoints.

You really can't argue with FREE though, just give it a try.

Yeah I think I'll give it a try

Yeah, I also found the respawn timer slightly annoying. Especially once you get to the crossroads, which has 4 or 5 massive areas connected to it, and it is simply impossible to explore all those areas without hitting the respawn timer.

There are a couple of things you need to know about Path of Exile. Don't look everything, because town portal scrolls are quite expensive. Secondly, if you are like me and you like to cover every inch of the map thoroughly you will get a little bit annoyed because of the respawn timer.

Edit: I still have it installed on my PC though, which is more than I can say about Diablo III. I guess that says something :D

<Necro>

Finally got around to playing this .. pretty good so far. Damn good looking game as well.

Yeah it's pretty good. Hard to believe it's free to play. I need to play it a bit further, haven't really made any progress in a while.

Getting my D3 buddies to get it as well. I'm quite impressed with it (so far). I particularly like the delicious "splat" sound when you smack someone in the face with a hammer.
