PC hardware sales continue free fall

Well each time I build a pc I end up buying a notebook because I can get similar specs for cheaper.

When did that end up happening anyway?

Built an i3 with 8gb ram, 1tb hdd and a cheap gpu the other day, freaking R14K!

Hardware sales are declining, but prices are not. The only reason I'd want to build a pc would be for gaming. Then I look at the graphics cards prices (edit: and CPUs!) and think twice! It's become so expensive to be a pc gamer, that consoles make more sense nowadays. My personal desktop pc has become a dev tool. Really, the only reason I would want to purchase a brand new system would be for games.

I honestly can't see why non-IT folks would want to fork out thousands just for a new computer. Their 4-5 year old laptops or desktops are more than adequate for spreadsheets, websurfing (which most people I know prefer doing on tablets), facebook and the occasional Spider Solitaire.

This is only true for South Africa.
Hardware prices in the US and Eu haven't changed at all in the last few years. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of our piss poor ANC government and shit president that railroaded the country and Rand.
AstroTurf if you got to 14K with the specs you mentioned you didn't shop properly.
I just put together an i5 build for the same money and it's running a R9 380X gpu.

So true.

it sucks that if you really want to get ahead in the gaming world a laptop is the best bet cost wise. But i love my desktop i dont think i would ever want to replace it but the cost for parts are really becoming crazy.

the need for computers is going to go down even more with like said before people use tablets and consoles to fuel the need for tech, why even get a PC then.
I hope it becomes better and have RSA not have a shit exchange rate.
