PC price shocker

Bad news for us PC gamers...
From ITWeb Channel Newsletter:

"In channel news this week, PC prices are set to increase by as much as 15% from this week, as distributors and importers cannot afford to absorb a sharply devalued rand, and have no choice but to pass higher prices on to end-users."

Luckily I already upgraded to "top-of-the-range" (whatever that means these days), a couple of months ago and I'm unlikely to upgrade again for a couple of years... although, I do still have my eye on a second Geforce N560GTX-TI card for SLI. Should perhaps get that sooner than later.

I do hope that the rand strengthens again soon... even games on special on steam are not so "special" anymore.

The worst is going to be the petrol price increase but yes it does suck that game prices are going to increase. Especially buying from Steam is quite a bit different now.

The Rand goes down prices go up, the Rand goes up prices stay the same. :)

Lol then they blame it on inflation XD. The joys of our economic system. But we've survived a heavy Rand vs Dollar times for long periods of time before. Doubt this will too much different

The retailer I work at, has pushed the prices of CPU's, HDD's and RAM up today. Prices may go up even further depending on the exchange rate.

Rand dollar should go below 8 again... The odd thing is that companies that transact in foreign currencies are meant to hedge the change in exchange...

Petrol price is another joke.... The Brent price went to $104 today... We don't see that affecting the price of petrol even though that was a good 20% or more decrease since last week.

It's not the last thin we going to be complaining about in terms of price hikes due to rand devaluation.

Dont get me started on the food prices :(
Bought meat for braaiday and lets just say I took a while choosing meat as all the prices are so crazy.

Not to mention the restaurants who hiked their prices when the soccer world cup was here and the prices stayed where they were. Even on the spur menu you find many things are sitting at R99.99.

And the rand breaks the R8/$ barrier. These companies are just using the increase as a believable excuse to make a bit more profit. Most of them made their orders before the increase anyway.

It really depends how they are being billed as well. What does support your theory is that prices seldom come down when the Rand strengthens.

It does... But like i said earlier... You don't just transact in foreign currency like this. If you are a company with such a large amount of risk in foreign currency you make plans to hedge such. There is no such thing as "passing it on to your customer" unless it is a long term currency shift which this recent one definitely wasn't.

I'm okay with this. Prices will go up. That's a certainty like death and taxes.

What it forces gamers to do though is to think a lot more carefully about what game(s) they spend their hard earned money on. I've started doing this a long time ago - I've saved a lot of money by not running out to the shops and buying any and all news games that have just been released. Instead, I earmark one or two really promising titles and then wait and see how they develop. For instance, the only games that are a "must-buy-now" for me are BF3, Arkham City and Forza Motorsport 4. Other games like Deus Ex and Gears 3 will be bought later, when they're on sale or in the bargain bin. Of course, my taste differs to the next guy, and he might pick up Gears 3 immediately and not even bother about FM4. In fact, the only reason why I'm buying FM4 and Arkham City on release day is because I've pre-ordered the collector's editions which won't be available a few months from their release. If we didn't have those collector's incentives, I'd probably wait a few months before I bought them as well - but BF3 is a must have for me since that's the game and genre which I focus on all the time.

It all comes down to priorities. If you can accomplish some discipline in that regard you'll realize that you spend a lot less money on games AND you'll even manage to dodge those titles which looked great in the trailers, but borked completely when they were eventually released (like DN: Forever). If we start to spend our money on games which truly deserve our cash, we'll see developers and publishers releasing quality games again. You can't milk a dead-cow - if there's no money to milk from gamers anymore, they'll stop that and start producing good stuff again, or close their doors.
