PC Stolen, need help replacing it

Howdy,

As stated in the title, my pc or rather pc's were stolen 2 weeks ago.:(

I have R10k to build a new rig and need some advice on specs.

I had a Q6600, 4 gigs ddr2 800, intel mobo, HD4890 1gig, coolermaster 600w psu, samsung 2494 monitor, 160 gig 7200 rpm HDD.

I do not need a keyboard or a mouse as that was not stolen (who would want my G15 anyways!).

What do I use the pc for? Online games like EVE, WoW and perhaps some AION.

If possible could you break down your suggestions into:
1) Mobo
2) CPU
3) PSU
4) RAM
5) GPU
6) HDD
7) Monitor

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
J

Wow, that sucks man!

I'd suggest going for a
TYPE MODEL COST
1) Mobo Asus P7P55D LE R1670
2) CPU Core i5 (750) R2090
3) PSU Cooler Master eXtreme - RS-650-PCAR-E3 - 650 Watt - Power Supply Unit R918
4) RAM OCZ Reaper HPC Edition Memory - DDR3-1800MHz - 4GB Kit R1532
5) GPU MSI nVidia GeForce Graphics Card GTX260 - N260GTX-T2D896 - 896MB - PCI-E R2248
6) HDD Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 - 1TB HDD 32MB Cache - SATA 2 - 3.0GB/s R830
7) Monitor Samsung 2233BW 22 inch Wide Screen LCD Monitor R2142
R11430

I'll +1 Slipperducks post.

Awesome PC right there, couldn't pick the components better myself.

I'd rather go for the acer 23" Full HD

ACER 23" Wide Screen LCD - Black - 5ms - 40000:1 - HDCP
R 1799.00

or a Samsung 2333SW 23" HD like mine

Samsung 23" Wide Screen LCD - Black - 5ms - 20000:1 - HD Format
R 1879.00

With the saving on the screen price I would add R100 and get the GTX275

XFX GTX 275 896MB DDR3 - XXX Edition
R 2399.00

GTS275 896MB - PCI Express 2.0 - Core: 640Mhz / Memory: 2260Mhz

Other than that lekker machine!

Thanks for the replies and advice. I would like to stay within the 10k mark as the insurance will be paying and I will have to cough up anything over.

I'd Probably go for the 2494hs screen that you previously had, once u have gone big, u cant go back to 23" as well it features a HDMI port so if you have a ps3 or a blu ray dvd player its much more worth it. Screen is going for 2050, for extra size and hdmi port and well eh extra speakers i guess then i would say its definately worth it, had the samsung 2333BW before but i now have the 2494hs monitor, i much prefere it.

1) Replace the motherboard with the MSI P55-GD65. It's far superior to the Asus, especially at that price point (it overclocks better and has two PCI-E 8X slots. Go read some reviews on it if you don't believe me.)

2) CPU is okay, i'm still more a fan of the 860, but thats out of budget.

3) Nice PSU.

4) DDR3-1800 is overkill, unless you overclock quite substantially. I'd recommend something along the lines of DDR3-1600 from Mushkin. Remember, if you're going i5, the memory needs to be rated at 1.65V or lower.

5) You can buy an ATi HD 4890 for under R2000 these days. Makes no sense to buy a GTX260/275.

6) I'm very much not a fan of Seagate after the whole firmware debacle. I'd spend a bit more money (which you saved on the ram and gfx card) on the Western Digital Caviar Black (model number: WD1001FALS). Faster drive, and I'm more convinced as to the reliability of WD drives in general.

7) I'd most definitely go for the Samsung P2370. Best bang for buck, and it's true HD (unlike the 2494HS).

Incidentally, not attacking your choices slippery, just used your list as a base for comparison :)

Thanks again for the advice.

I will not be overclocking at all so that can be factored in. I had a 4890 and I might just go with that again as I was aiming to upgrade that come end of next year.

Lastly, I'll need to factor in a case. Any ideas on a case whilst trying to stay withing 10k?

Well the above machine is already over budget by about R1000 i'm afraid :(

You simply can't build a half-way decent machine for less than R10 000 unless you buy parts 2nd hand.

As to a case, look at this thread: http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=2989

Personally, I'm using the Thermaltake Element S chassis atm, and it's frankly one of the best mid-towers i've come across - as evidenced by the fact that i managed to fit my OTT rig (including WC) into the case. And it still looks neat and tidy. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if its widely available yet. Price should be under R1000 though.

I am contemplating looking at AMD. The thing is I have never owned an AMD and as such, I have absolutely no clue on what specs to look at.

I am contemplating looking at AMD. The thing is I have never owned an AMD and as such, I have absolutely no clue on what specs to look at.

My suggestion would be:

AMD Phenom II x4 Quad Core 965 - Boxed CPU - 3.4Ghz Socket AM3 - Black Edition - R2,728

Asus M4A785TD-M EVO AMD 785G Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + FWa + SATA2 RAID + DVI + HDMI - R1,292

Cooler Master eXtreme - RS-650-PCAR-E3 - 650 Watt - Power Supply Unit - R918

Super Talent DDR3-1333 2GB (2x1GB) Memory Module Kit - R527

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 - 500GB HDD 16MB Cache - SATA 2 - 3.0GB/s R475

Samsung 2494HS 23.6 inch LCD Widescreen Monitor - R2,383

Club 3D GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 - 55nm - 448-bit 575MHz Clock - PCI-E - R2,155

Total: R10,478 excluding delivery.

The PSU is decent, and since chances are slim that you'll ever go SLi/CrossFire you won't really need more. I'd prefer a 750W simply for the sake of longevity, but you can't really go too wrong with a 650W either.

The board is cheap, but reliable and has a very decent feature set.

The CPU is one of the best (if not the current best) in the AMD range and when I upgrade later, should new ones not have been released by then, it'll be to that. (I'm currently on an Intel Q9550).

RAM, well, it's great for a 2GB set, and you can always buy another 2GBs or better RAM, if you prefer, later.

The hard drive, well, I adore Seagate and I have a few - one is almost ten years old, another is six, and they still work perfectly. The firmware issue is long over with. The drives are cheap, reliable as hell, so, why not :)

Monitor... It's beautiful ;)

The GPU, well, it's not exactly top of the range any more. I have the Leadtek version of the same card. I've never heard of this brand, but I don't see how you can go wrong with a warranty :p GTX260 still works like a charm and easily has a few years left in it yet. If you'd prefer ATi, well, for about the same price you can get an HD4870 instead, but I confess that I'm an nVidia fanboi, so I leave that decision entirely up to you.

Yes, I know the ensemble is about R500 more than what you said you're willing/able to fork out, but I say, in all honesty, go for it. Any less and you'll be wishing you saved up a bit longer. If money is really an issue, buy what you can this month, and get the rest next month. *shrug* Just a thought...

For R2000 he can get a 4890 from either prophecy(Force3D) or Rebeltech(Club3D).

Ta for the inputs. The AMD setup looks interesting. Is there anywhere where I can compare performance between the phenom and, lets say, an i5?

Is that going to be enough ram to run windows 7 (and all my fav. online games)?
