Nice article, just wish it had a more solid conclusion.

Now to grab the popcorn and watch the fun.

...and you conveniently forgot to add a mouse, keyboard and possibly even a controller to the PC bundle. Without those it's just an expensive coaster sitting under your desk. So tack on another R1000 at least to the PC build.

I'm no platform hater - I have a gaming PC, gaming-ish laptop and both PS3 and PS4.

Only time a gaming PC becomes cheaper is with Steam and Bundle sales, but then you're forced to play older games. Which is fine for me anyway, as I have a huge backlog of unplayed, great games.

This is an age old debate that will never be put to rest!

PCers will keep on PCing and Consolers will keep on Consoling!

I prefer a sedan car to a 4x4...
I prefer KFC to McDonalds...
I prefer brunettes over blonds...
I prefer romantic comedies to horror movies...

These are all examples of my preferences. These preferences are based on my experience, needs, requirements, budget and, most importantly, they are based on my opinion. Neither of these things are better than the other, but I just prefer certain things.

It is the same with gaming. I prefer gaming on Console. Yes, that's rights, I'm a dirty console peasant. I prefer sitting in my comfy couch, with a controller in hand, playing a game on my TV. This is my preference, based on my opinions and my requirements. This is why I also went with the Xbox One over the PS4. I get home each day, turn on the Xbox, listen music through it while I cook, then watch a series or a movie, I would play a game or two, then maybe watch a Youtube video. I know a PC and a PS4 can do all this, but I like doing all this on my Xbox.

This does not mean that the Xbox is better than any other platform. It simply means that the Xbox fits my life style and my requirements better than the others. It doesn't even mean that I don't use other platforms. My PC is always on in my room, and many time I will play one of the many games I have on it. And I'll love playing on my PC. But at the end of the day, my Xbox get's more love than my PC.

I know this may have missed the point of the article, which centered around cost. I am fortunate enough to afford both a current gen console and a gaming PC, so cost for me was never an issue. It came down to preference. And my preferences lead me to the store and made me pay for an Xbox One. And I've never been more happy gaming!

The platform is really irrelevant to be honest, for me it's all about the titles. I prefer some titles on XBOX, others on the Wii and my default fallback platform is the PC. Hell I even game on my phone and tablet. Tomb Raider is an example of a brilliant console title, however it looks better on PC, but I don't really care what it looks like, it plays well. Grid, NFS Shift, Forza, etc are all titles I prefer on console. When it comes to CoD, Battlefield and pretty much anything I need pinpoint accuracy for shooting I want it on the PC. Starcraft on console? are you mad? For FPS & Strategy titles the PC is the platform I want.

I love all my platforms, as much as they all cost me. The PC is nice to have when money is a bit tight and I don't want to fork out R800 for a new game (if it is available on PC too that is).

Well PC games are getting quite close to the R800 price tag. Not far off. Like the New BF Hardline, R600 :/

True. I remember the days you could get a new AAA title for R300. It's only pushing people further away from PC gaming. A good rig itself is already so expensive.

Well I'm sure that as a person with all the latest platforms you should be able to construct a good idea on how it is to live with each, and why to prefer the one over the other...

Nah, he'll just have more post-purchase rationalization than anyone else. :p

got a xbox 360 and a ps3 and i will get the xbox one and ps4 so when there a exclusive like Sf5 or Tomb Raider then i can still get them :) but my main console is xbox :p

You can get a keyboard and mouse for R200-R300.

From the article:

Article said:
Raru also might not be the cheapest place to get all the components. If you shop around, it is probably possible to shave a few hundred Rand off.

These savings can be put towards a basic keyboard and mouse, which were left off the component list for this very reason.

Edit: Forgot to add my response to this part...

Not true. New PC games are sold for much cheaper at retail in South Africa than console games are sold for.

I'm not going to take bite of this bait, something fishy here.

Le gasp! I'm insulted!

You can't do a comparison of a "console killing" PC and only use a R300 set of peripherals. I dread gaming on a cheap bundle like that. My HT keyboard+mouse cost more than that and I'll never be able to game with that. Sure, a R300 keyboard alone should suffice, but you'll need to add on a R400 mouse at least.

...and seeing as many modern cross-platform games are designed to work best with controllers, you'll need to add on another R400 at least for that.

So R1000 is quite conservative when talking about the necessary input devices to at least match the console gaming experience. It's the only tactile part of gaming, so you can't skimp too much on that - which is probably the reason the controllers of a new console garner so much attention before launch.

They each have their pros and cons...

In my opinion, if all you are going to be doing is gaming, get a console... I PC is far more versatile in the sense that you can do work on it as well as play games... My home will never be without a PC, but I will also always have a console plugged in in my lounge...

Evetech called their build a "console killer", those weren't my words. The purpose of this comparison wasn't to build a console killer, but to see what the minimum was the we might be able to get away with to make a point.

I also highlight in the article that to truly be a spec-for-spec comparison we would have to add the cost of a Blu-Ray drive, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. That also adds a lot of cost.

Last time round there were plenty of haters in the comments who insinuated that PC gaming was simply cheaper. This comparison disproves that and gives an idea of when PC gaming can become cheaper on the minimum possible expense.

It varies, but using a price differential of R300 between new console vs new PC releases in South Africa, you basically have to buy at least 12 AAA games in the lifecycle of the PC for it to work out cheaper than a console.

Not shown in this article, but I actually did the calculation: Comparing a R20k PC to a PS4, you will have to buy 50 AAA games before the PC becomes cheaper.

To me, that's a ton of games. I don't think I bought 20 AAA titles in the last generation at launch day prices.

Although I love my Xbox consoles and my Ps3, I believe the PS4 has in ways beat the XB1, it's slimmer, it has less hassles with regard to updates and what you can access without internet, it has remote play.

I got frustrated at the limitations of the XB1, but I still won't get rid of it, love the exclusive titles and the controller.

I used to game on my PC,but upgrading was costing me way too much, yes getting games was easier and cheaper, but to have to get a R2000+ graphics card, compatible motherboard, continuously upgrading the RAM was killing me and getting a bigger box to house it all.

One day I would like to get a PS4, it's a very impressive design, only draw back is you cannot attach an external HDD, which is rather stupid.
