Playing vs Watching games

I was watching content by a Youtuber called Aarava. He specializes in Formula 1 content, and play a range of Formula 1 games, including F1 2016 and Motorsport Manager. Both of these games I own, but I realized that I have probably watched more hours of his content than actually playing the games myself. I'm in the position right now that I don't really feel the need of playing these games, as I've consumed the content enough by watching it

With services like Youtube Gaming and Twitch Streaming, millions of gamers spent hours upon hours watching other peopl play games. Many of these viewers, like me, spending more hours watching the game than actually playing it.

Another example I found is Kerbal Space Program. I love the game so much, but I haven't played it in a while. In fact I think the last time I properly sat down and played the game was over 3 months ago. Yet, every week I still watch Scott Manley's KSP videos, I still consume the content created by the KSP sub-reddit.

Is it just me, or are there other people that also find themselves watching some games more than actually playing them? Which games fall in this category for you?

I usually like watching games that I tend not to play, scary games, playstation and xbox games, but I find multiplayer games the best to watch, that is usually when the youtubers are the funniest and most entertaining.

For me its the binding of isaac. I actually worked it out the other day that i have spent around 1000 hours of watching the binding of isaac. And only one dudes videos. Over and over. The other games i will watch is games i wont buy myself. Or simply games that someone on youtube plays that i enjoy watching. Dark souls 3 is another one i have watched probably 10 times more hours then what i have played.

I have spent most of my life watching others play games, I took a particular interest in RPG's when I was about 7 or 8.I would spend my afternoons after school watching my brother play Final Fantasy VIII and IX then much later on X ( which I played myself). Long story short, I enjoy being both a spectator and participant.

Being a spectator can become mundane though, especially when the person playing constantly dies. "whistle:

Resident evil 4 comes to mind.

Ashley:" Help! Leon! Help! Leon!!"

*Player dies*

Ashley:"Help! Leon! Help! Leon!"

*Player dies* *again and again and again*

I think we had to mute the tv.

Only time I ever watch gameplay is when I'm deciding on whether to purchase said game. Even then I only watch 5-10 minutes of gameplay which is usually enough for me to make up my mind.

I am exactly the same. I actually don't get the appeal of watching the games or people playing the games - I get that horrible SPOILER ALERT feeling.....

I watched some of Day9's starcraft videos when starcraft came out. Other than that, not really.

I don't have DSTV and not really bothered about watching TV series' and movies. So my staple in take of watching consumption is Let's Plays.

I watch too many/much Dark Souls playthroughs than I care to admit.
