PS3 hackers claim the console is now definitely cracked

If Sony had simply left it so that the slim consoles also supported Linux like the original fat versions, I wonder whether this or even the jailbreak would have happened?

It would have, only difference would be that the cracker wouldn't have had a nice reason for his illegal activities.

Agree with Spookie on this one, there will always be someone out there who wants to get their shit for free instead of paying for it, by cracking the ps3 he now no longer needs to buy games. Hopefully Sony will come up with a cunning counter attack for this.

As I understand there's nothing Sony can do about this short of releasing the PS4. What sucks about this is that now people can start hacking multiplayer like on PC.

Well im sure the must be a way of detecting when a console has been cracked and then either banning them of PSN or do what Batman AA did, if the game is cracked disable the glide function in game.

I'm not so sure hey. From what I've read it seems that it will be quite difficult to detect unless Sony finds some other way of doing it. Only time will tell though.

We would have probably still seen minor and clunky hacks like the USB dongle coming out, but those are easy for Sony to control. I don't think we would have seen something as bad as this though.

Contrary to what most people think, the people with the skills to actually find holes and bypass security systems do not do it to promote piracy. They often do it to "open" up a system. It was never really necessary on the PS3 since it had always been a open system with homebrew support right out of the box. When Sony yanked linux they may as well have aired a world wide TV ad challenging every hacker to bust the system open again.

oh bullshit, they do it for piracy end of story, the pretty sugar coat of it being "to challange" themselves is bull crap mate.

in the end it's to get away with being a cheap ass tard.

Wow, lots of hate in this thread. Blackhand is correct. If Sony hadn't disabled OtherOS this wouldn't have happened, or at least wouldn't have happened right now.

The whole idea was to get homebrew working again. Unfortunately this opens the door for other applications like piracy.

Don't get me wrong, I doubt very much that they care that they're creating piracy for the PS3. They're just happy they got their homebrew back. It's almost like companies that create guns, they don't care what you use it for. But then they get paid for it.

As I stated in the comments of this article: How can they detect this? I may be mistaken, but there is no way.

The keys that were leaked are used to sign the discs. There is NO hack required on the console itself.

Thanks to Geohot and fail0verflow's PS3 exploits, Sony has ordered a restraining order to get all root keys/exploits taken offline, and to seize their computers for searching, too. Gulp. [Geohot - Thanks, Adriano!]

Before people get their panties in a bunch, this is merely to see what kind of reaction this will elicit.

Wrong. Sony pissed off the wrong people when they removed the Linux support. Check these 3 videos where the hackers go in depth on how (and why) they did it:

Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuIlbmn-4A4
Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ybm9-w7Bl2A
Part 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btDiX319P4w

It's quite clear these guys have no interest in piracy. They didn't even try and extract the game signing keys.
