PS4 not usable as media server

There's very bad news in store for home theater enthusiasts, though. Sony says you'll be unable to use the PS4 as a client for your media server. The next-gen console is shipping without DLNA support, a significant step backwards for a device that's likely to be a living room centerpiece for many. Even more unfortunate, the PS4 can't play MP3 files, suggesting that Sony wants users to turn to its own store and third-party apps for all media needs. And your CD collection? Useless. Sony has decided that now's the time to end support for audio CD playback.

Someone just pointed this out on MyBB...

Really? :wtf:

Well, that's that sorted for me.

1) Sony doesn't support region migration and I'm not prepared to throw away my PSN account and the games bought on it.
2) The PSN network is incredibly slow--1.5GB can take an hour to download on a 500Mbps line whereas on 360 or PC, it's done in under a minute.
3) Not able to be used as a media centre?

Basically 95% of what I use my PS3 for is Netflix and streaming video from my PC. It's the only reason I'd even bother owning a console, to be perfectly honest.

The 5% is made up for exclusive titles such as Quantic Dream's games and the odd JRPG.

Sorry, PS4, but it seems the XBone has you beaten there.

I'm becoming increasingly fed up with Sony and their stupid policies, DRM and draconian mentality.

I think you're one of those people Microsoft were targeting with the Xbox1 :p

Everyone else is like "PS4 gpu>Xbox1 gpu, 'nough said "

Interested to see what mygamers have to say about this

I don't do fanboism, really. I like to think I'm a fairly pragmatic gamer, I go for what I believe is objectively "best" suited to my needs.

The PS3 had a bunch of JRPGs, could play Blurays and work as an excellent media server. Hence, my needs were met.

Now? Yuck.

In the last year, after dealing with their support and coming to realise how completely incompetent Sony is on a "global" scale (i.e. Sony America, Sony EU and Sony Japan have absolutely no idea what each other is doing and cock everything up royally), how adamant they are on enforcing draconian DRM and generally not actually giving a crap about their customers beyond trying to make as much money out of them as possible, I've become increasingly hesitant about supporting them.

The PS4 looks like a good machine if all you want to do with it is stick a game disc in and play. But I don't know, it's almost 2014, I want more from a device.

While I don't have anything against the XBone, per se, all the games coming out on it that are worth playing will be out on PC. And if I was going to JUST have a media centre than I'd get one.

*SIGH*

If I recall, the xbox one is the same as the PS4, it will stream TV via cable, internet or your box/decoder but will not stream media.

Really? Both of them have taken this silly route? Madness...

Oh well... Will have to investigate this further a bit later.

I cant find the article now, I saw the news on reddit, and a poster had given a link stating that the XB1 is the same. Honestly it's not a massive let down for me. My options to stream media are not gimped completely, I can use a usb memory stick, connect to my PC via HDMI or just watch it at my desk.

It's quite the let-down that the console are unable to stream media, should it be true. Luckily I do have a media player so it's not the worst thing. But with all Microsoft's statements telling us that they want the Xbone to the the media centre of your living room, it would be a shame if they don't support it...

Guess Steam Machines gonna be rolling out everywhere. Not only can it Stream media but you can also stream games from your Home PC....

Sony and Microsoft making it way too easy for Valve

Yet Sony and MS will sell millions as it appeals to gamers.

I will not argue that at all.

What I am pointing out is that millions will also look at/start getting Steam machines. Its here where they make it way too easy for Valve to get a foot hold. Cause people will 1st install it as to have media/Streaming PC's but it might open another debate, buy new game for XB1 or PS4 console or simply buy it via Steam where its cheaper and if you build a decent PC will have better specs and FX.

Now if the new consoles could stream media it would negate the whole add another device onto the TV. So like I said they making it to easy for Valve.

Meh, doesn't bother me in the slightest. Not like I'm going to sell my PS3 (which can do all of the above) when I eventually buy a PS4. Also, I'll be buying a PS4 to play games, not to use a media server, I have enough other devices for that.

My thoughts exactly, PC, TV, cellphone can all do it. My phone can stream media to my pc and tv via wifi, the tv has RJ45 and HDMI network and media streaming is made so easy these days.

I am not planning to run my PS4 through my TV, but rather my PC screen. I want to be close to my pc if I want to play a game or type up an assignment.

The whole audio playback thing is a mute subject for me. (see what I did there?) I rarely play audio/mp3 cd's on my console. Also, according to the official FAQ there's no voice overs on recorded clips which is a bit crappy as they can just as well use the headphone input to overlay the audio channel and encode it to 96kbps if size is a major issue.

What is concerning to me is the fact that external HDD's will not be supported. They should be able to add it later on with firmware patches but not allowing for it at launch sucks.

With all of these issues and the other's that were raised in the FAQ, we must remember that patches and firmware updates will most probably bring these wanted features back. They probably didn't include it at launch as they want to develop the feature properly before releasing it to the public. It makes sense to release it later and make sure it works first time rather than adding loads of features at launch that has issues and cause widespread panic/dissatisfaction.

I'm currently hopping between HDMI channels on my TV for my pc and PS3.
I will just continue on using my pc as my media center as I've not had any issues and it's easier to teach someone where to go to get a movie on a pc than on a console. imo.

The questions I want to pose, is seeing as both consoles will be able to do HDMI play-through, for connecting cable TV and the like, I wonder if DSTV will be able to be played through the consoles? Now that would be something.

I know that the XB1 can do that. Not too sure about the PS4.

Oh, I see what you did there, you used the wrong word and thought you made a clever pun. :p

:D

For those of you wondering, the correct word is moot :p

Well that's you,as I see you are from Sweden, here in SA we don't use Netflix or stream vids or tv shows on our consoles,we primarily use it for gaming, which was what the console was created for GAMING.

I don't care about the media thing,it doesn't bring a enough revenue (for Sony) to beat gaming sales and online gameplay. That's why they chucked the media thing out. It's a waste of space on the console and I'd assume you'd have to keep the program updated, and how much data won't that take and space.

From? No, South African expat, actually. Also, a number of South Africans actually do use Netflix and stream videos and TV shows on their consoles. Citation 1; Citation 2; Citation 3.

Again, you might not care but others do.

It's convenient having one device that can do multiple things rather than having your TV area covered by four billion devices. Convergent technologies ftw and all that.
