PS4: SA launch in December, price indicated

I don't see the problem here either.

First, I paid R5500 for my PS3 at launch. Taking into account inflation and hardware advancement, R6300 is actually quite reasonable.

Second, there are PC video cards that cost this kind of money, and they get replaced more often. But, by my maths, my PS3 has provided me with a gaming system for less than R70 a month.

I say suck it up, whip out the credit card, and be thankful you're not mortgaging your house to buy an Xbox One.
 
Whether the price is justifiable or not is, unfortunately, not relevant to me. The reality is that R6300 is too rich for my blood. Hell, you could build a decent middle of the road gaming PC for that money.

What he said. I've actually spent way more than I should have on pc components over the years. My ps3 on the other hand has given me more bang for my buck these last few years.
 
I can't really say that price point surprises me. Got to suck it up for this awesome system.

Can't help but laugh at the "I want a high end gaming system for the price of a low-end gaming system, and at the same time I want it to be cheaper than Europe, even though my country has crazy import duties, a worthless currency and legislation that prohibits any free market movements" people :wtf:

Anyone who complains about this simply does not understand basic economics. Price is dictated by demand, which is linked to the size and spending power of your market.

All things considered, I think the price is spot-on. It's inline with UK pricing, and cheaper than a Samsung Galaxy S4. Sure, it's a lot of cash for most people living in SA, but SA is a developing economy, and that is simply one of the prices we pay for living here.

Oh well, here is hoping our KAK exchange rate strengthens by the end of the year...

Just for shits sake, I'm going to Europe at the end of the year, if I purchase the console there and bring it back in my luggage, do I still have to pay import duties? and if so, how much would they be?

You will save the $20 I included for shipping and insurance (which is on the low end). There are no import duties but VAT will still be applicable and payable at customs, you can try sneaking it through but Customs are bloodhounds for big boxes. I was lucky that when I bought my Dive watch I could fit it on my wrist and so they didn't catch me but coming back from Singapore they found the PS3s and xboxs on fellow passengers
 
Not everyone buys multiple thousand rand phones ....... nor does everyone spend thousands on their PC every 2nd or 3rd month. It's stupid to stifle commentary on the high price with "Oh but phone price" or something similar.
 
There are those who will complain about the console's price, but then walk around with an expensive phone that costs more than the console. And yes, the console is very expensive - especially if 6 grand isn't in your monthly budget.

Most of us with those expensive phones didn't buy it cash. Did anyone hear of a cell phone contract? Also the phone doesn't need a R600 game to be useable on the first day. Comparing apples to oranges here.
