PS4 will "out-power most PCs for years to come"

LOL I had such a laugh at this.

I’m glad Sony decided to go with 8GB RAM because it means that the PS4 will out-power most PCs for years to come.

Who is this idiot? lol

Hardware specs are pretty impressive on the PS4 but its still not close to most mid range gaming pc's.

Just Cause dev backs the PS4′s power

Well, considering what console graphics look like currently - I'm actually prepared to believe their statement. These days it seems you need twice the PC power to do what consoles do now on their own. Maybe it's because the PC is a multi-tasking platform whereas the consoles are dedicated towards gaming.

But consoles are also becoming more integrated and are used for more than just gaming these days. At the end of the day however, what are modern-day consoles other than slim-line PCs? Considering that statement, it is amazing how much developers can accomplish of they are certain of the hardware that they are developing for. Perhaps the "custom" factor behind PCs is its biggest downfall.

Biggest downfall for the pc is the fact that developers would rather develop for consoles, Much more $$ in their pockets.

I suppose developing for consoles does make your product available to a much wider audience. But I don't blame them. A great example would be the new Tomb Raider. What PC spec would you need to have in order to run the game at the same quality and speed that the console versions offer? I'd be willing to bet you'd be able to buy 3 consoles for the price of that PC.

Whilst still using Tomb Raider as my point of reference; that game has basically cemented my decision why I've given up on the PC as a gaming platform. I'm sitting at home with a helluva expensive PC that struggles to run a game that any XBOX / PS3 owners has been able to play, and finish, without issue. What makes it worse is that I know my PC has 10 times more CPU/GPU power available. And let's not even talk about hardware pricing. Seriously - you could buy both of the upcoming consoles for the price of a single nvidia GTX Titan, no - that makes no sense, what.so.ever.

For me, my next hardware upgrade on my PC is a 27" iMAC. That will be used for coding, photo editing and general surfing / productivity.
When it comes to gaming, consoles have won in my mind.

I would have to agree. If you compare the PS4 to the current PS3 then the increases are quite high. However, don't go comparing it to a PC. That is just silly.

I think we need to understand first, that a PC and PSx with the same specs, the PSx will outperform the PC... this is due to the RISC-like architecture used to build this console.

So a 7770, even a weak card on PC nowadays, will perform very well on a PS4 when the game is written specifically for it.

Will it out-power most PC's for years to come?.Maybe, hardware prices are always decreasing though.

Will it out-power Gaming PC's for years to come?.nope,a current mid range gaming PC is more powerful then the PS4.

I don't know it's just quite a bold statement to say without any form of detail... What is most pcs? I mean surely it's kind of stupid to compare something built for word-processing to something built for gaming

Here's my opinion and I doubt it will change

A mid level PC will be more powerful than a psx, not necessarily more efficient but still more powerful. End of the day a PC will always be your baby and something to be proud off but you can't brag and customise with a PS.

ps4 is using x86 architecture not risc, ps3 is a risc based cpu

I know very little about hardware but I do know ( from casual observation over the years ) that pc CLEARLY dominates consoles after about 1-2 years of the consoles release. Im talking from the casual observer viewpoint like screenshots, gameplay demo's etc.

So im quite surprised that experienced programmers would make such a statement.

Can I also mention how much attention Eugene's new PC is getting. You won't get the same responce when you say your getting a new PSx

I don't think that a fair comparison to make. It's an enthusiast thing. In the end all we should really care about are the games.

I could've sworn we had this conversation back when the PS3 was about to be released.

And look how many framerate issues its games had then and still have now. Console games are balanced (read: sacrifices are made) between how much content can be displayed/rendered on screen and performance.

The PS4 is unlikely to be any different. Though it's certain to be an awesome gaming platform, comparing its performance to something as customisable and open-ended as a PC is farcical.

While most PCs are obviously not gaming PCs, gaming PCs are still inherently superior to any console.

The sole advantage and appeal of a console (to me, at least) is its convenience. And as an enthusiast, that's not good enough.

Hell, I'm still very much of the opinion that the Xbox is a wannabe PC and the Playstation is a JRPG and BluRay dream (only reason I own one :D).
