Rather splurge out an extra R100 - R200 and get 600W+. At some point you're going to upgrade your PC and require a much bigger PSU. It's better to pay a little extra now than buy a brand now one again a year or two down the line.

Actually they are. Current goes straight through it & they one kick in (interact) with the mains power if needed. They aren't the ones you really want though. Double conversion is best, but also well out of most people's price range. :/
 
I think surge protection is going to be the cheapest and easiest here. A smallish 600VA UPS can cost around R800, and that may cause more damage than it is worth in it's benefits.

We got quoted on a 3.5kVA double conversion line interactive UPS, was around R11k a while back IIRC...
