Question about Radeon ati 5770

I'm looking to get a Radeon 5770 now, since it seems pretty damn good (dx 11 goodness) and it's managable, budget wise. Only 2 grand if I saw right? But I will have to get a new motherboard and processor for it- so now I want to know what are the cheapest ones you would be able to get? Without having a gimp computer ofc.

What are your specs atm? From what I've read the 5770 isn't much faster that a 4870 or 4850, but has the added benefit of DX11 and eyefinity.

Why would you need an upgrade there? What are you running?

My specs are terrible.

Pentium D 3.0ghz
Geforce 8600GTS 256mb

Why I'm looking around for a decent upgrade. In the R5000 area- doubt I'll manage a 5770 with that. Why I'm asking :D Heard lots of stories of this card being bottle necked, and not running to it's full potential if you don't have the right motherboard, and maybe processor.. So I don't want to get the wrong things for it

I would start with the basics, so look at getting the i5 750 and some decent RAM and a mobo, should set you back less R4000. Then keep your 8600 for a few months and put some cash together for something decent, like a 5850 maybe, or even the 5770 if you don't want to spend that much.

What size monitor you using?

Just a small 17 inch bah :p

What's a mobo by the way? Also what would you consider decent ram? Gots err 3gb on this rig at the moment.

Well thats cool, it will take significant load off your graphics card, so the 5770 should be perfect. What resolution is that BTW, 1280x1024?

Hehe, sorry, mobo=motherboard.

As for RAM, I assume you have DDR2 RAM? You will need DDR3 if you want to go i5, but its fairly cheap these days. You can get a 2gb Kingston set of DDR3 1333 MHz for around R500.

I think its 1024x768 to be honest. And yeah, I have DDR2 at the moment and I'll probably go to DDR3. But I'm still stuck with the motherboard thing though, I have no idea which one to get for it. And those horror stories of if you don't have the right motherboard, the 5770 will suck.

I was suggested the 775 socket. But won't that drag the card down?

I'd strongly recommend the core i3 530, its much better value for money compared to the i5. I'm not sure if its available yet in SA though.

EDIT.

This is what I came up with.

MSI 785GTM-E45 R700
AMD Phenom II X4 965 R2000
Sapphire HD5750 Game Edition R1500
2gb DDR2 Ram R700?
Power Supply R400
Case R300
Hard drive R250

Comes to about R5850

It's just over my budget, but that looks like one solid computer there that would last me for quite a bit before having to upgrade again. Unless someone would suggest something better?

That actually looks like a pretty decent machine for the amount. I have heard that the 5770 is a good card but the problem is that it only has 128bit memory which can cause the bottle neck, I haven't heard of the mobo having any affect on it.

I am sure that you can get a cheaper phenom, R2000 is already i5 territory, in the latest (Or second latest) PC format, they have the Phenom or Athlon quad core for R1100.

Then you can get a decent mobo (maybe up that to R1000) If you are really keen on getting better deals you can always try buy from overseas stores who ship internationally.

I know the i3 is out overseas but not here.

It's too bad the i3 is not here yet, it should retail for around R1500 or less and at that price you'd have on of the fastest gaming CPU's on the market. There's really no point in getting a quad core CPU for gaming since most games still don't scale well, if at all over all the cores.

Read this review on Anandtech of the i3 530 to see exactly what I mean.

Personally I'd get the Phenom II X2 550BE. It's more than enough for any game today and the money saved could be used for something a little faster than a 5750.

Hmm you have intrigued me with that. This cpu is better than the one I listed, yet cheaper you say?? If so when is it coming to SA?

By the way, I'm rather going for the 5770 now rather than 5750.

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
Club 3D Radeon HD5770 128-bit 1GB GDDR5

Total: R3500.

By the way, what's the smallest power supply I can get? The 5770 needs 450w.

Interesting article there Isengard. I didn't relise that the i3 was dual core and not quad core. Thats fine, I see what you mean about the scaling of the cores for games etc. indeed makes sense.

Phenom seems fine. It reaches 69 on the first benchmark compared to 69.3 from the i3. But what worries me, is that they dont perform very well in the other tests, the phenom and Athlon. Core 2 Duo seems to be doing quite well.

Why are you going for the 5770?

I was suggested it by a friend. A cheap and effective dx11 card. I have a R2000 budget for graphics card, and R2000 budget for processor. So I'm trying to find the best for value with that budget at the moment.

oh I see. I wonder how much difference that actually makes. Probably not that much. R2000 for a processor, isnt the Phenom quite a bit cheaper:confused:
