I used a cheap usb one designed for windows media centre and it worked fine too.
I ordered my Pi (+ powersupply and case) through RS Components on December 17 and got it on Jan 20th.
For those people wondering about remotes, XBMC supports CEC. This means you can use your TV remote (if your TV supports it) if you connect via HDMI, no IR eyes or extra remotes needed. Samsung TVs call it AnyNet+, iirc.
Also, if you haven't checked it out yet, there's a distro for the pi that boots straight into Mame for arcade machine emulation.

This thing is just as awesome, by the way: LuminAR. It screws into a light bulb socket and projects a screen onto any flat surface, that doubles as a touch/AR interface.
