Spec Ops: The Line

specops_story4.jpg

I don't normally go for military shooter type games but Spec Ops: The Line was Zero Punctuation's game of the year for 2012 so I had to give it a try. And wow, I'm very impressed. The story is exceptional and even though the game is short it ended before it became too monotonous which is a good thing.

I'd say it's a must play for people who like good story in their games. And even though the game isn't a horror title, in some ways it really behaves like one. So it's definitely not for people who prefer to stay away from the morbidity and gruesomeness of horror games.

The game is also beautiful! It uses the Unreal Engine and the setting is Dubai after huge sand storms basically destroyed the city. I loved the setting.

So especially people who have it in your backlog, give it a try! You won't be disappointed.

It was a good game hey, and got you thinking a lot more than shooters usually do. It was one of those under the radar games I think, I only played it because it came on PS+, but it was worth it.

Grabbed a copy of F117 from gog last night and only went to bed just after midnight. The game is almost 24 years old and still as good as i remember it. The atmosphere is intense. "please don't ping me, please don't ping me. ah mother son of a %$#%"

8/10. Will eject again.

Sleeping Dogs (PS4) - 8/10.

Just loved this game. The city felt alive and there are a lot of stuff to do besides the main story line. This version includes all the DLC as well, adding extra missions, races and fights. Good combat, good gunplay, good cover mechanics, good story and believable characters for the most part. Driving is fun, but probably a bit unrealistic with even scooters feeling turbo charged. Lots of violence and language, so I could only play this when the kiddies wasn't near.

Graphically it does look nice, especially at night with all the neon and when it rains, but I think they could have done a bit better considering how other remasters look. Had a few audio glitches here and there, and some map icons not showing in the right place (Zodiac Island Tournament). Other than that, no complaints.

Mountain

Ah, the critically acclaimed Mountain. I've been intrigued by the game because of all the media attention it garnered. And for the fun of it I even created a thread here at MyGaming: http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/44107-Mountain where McT joined in.

I enjoy Rock Paper Shotgun as a gaming website and they especially had a lot of articles on Mountain. Such as:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/07/01/mountain-simulator-rps/

I got the idea that critics loved it and from Steam reviews it looked like users hated it. It's a game where you can't really do anything. Interaction is minimal. Can you even really call it a game? One person called it a glorified screensaver.
McT looks like he likes it. And I've got a lot of respect for the guy.

In my opinion though it's an interactive screensaver. If they made it a bit more interesting then I would have liked it. Like a little village on it where people walked around and did stuff. I mean that would have been interesting. A mountain with thoughts and changing weather just doesn't grab me. I want more!

It only costs a dollar.

So I don't know how to score it. Maybe a 5? You'll either like it or you won't. Chances are that you won't though.

Fable II

My wife loved Fable II. For her it's one of the best games she's ever played. She doesn't normally play rpgs so it's quite an impressive feat.

Now that I've played it I can see why my wife loved it. The game always shows you where to go. Combat is simple yet engaging. Plus you can get married, have children, buy a house, buy businesses and so forth. Hell you can even decorate your house. Plus you have a dog that follow you everywhere.

I look for something else in a game though. I want to be grabbed by the story and the characters. Yet I was never really that into it. The game never called to me to play it and everything just felt too shallow. Which is strange because there's a lot going on.

The game is alright but nothing spectacular.

FTL: Faster Than Light

ftl_011.jpg

I like the idea of roguelikes. Where everything is random and every playthrough is different. With every roguelike that I've played though I end up feeling as if the game could have been so much more. The same with FTL unfortunately.

When I started playing it I felt underwhelmed. It all felt a bit basic and undeserving of its praise. However the more I played the more I liked it. It's definitely a good time waster!

Yet I feel it can be so much more. It's just so basic. I'm hoping that an FTL two comes out that gives us more than jumping from place to place with little events. I want characters with stories! I want a universe to explore. In fact there's a lot more that FTL can do. My imagination is running wild here with the possibilities.

So it's a good effort but has left me wanting more.

Ryse: Son of Rome

news_our_videos_of_ryse_son_of_rome-14866.jpg

My first XBox One game and I finished it in a day. It was a great experience! The game took about 7 hours to complete which was just the right length if you didn't pay a ton of money for the game. Luckily I got it with the console. So I'd say if you haven't played this yet, wait until you can get it at a price that you are willing to pay for 7 hours of good gaming.

Now that we've got that out of the way. How good is the graphics! It's easily the best looking game I've ever played. It's gorgeous. The facial animations and quality of the textures. It's amazing what the CryEngine can do.

As for the gameplay, well it's gory and very violent. A lot of the game has you performing executions with quicktime events. Which may also deter people. Both the goriness and the quicktime events.

The story was great though and I never got bored. In fact it ended with me wanting more.

I can definitely recommend it if you can get it at a good price. It's not going to be for everyone. If you look at critic reviews and user reviews then it really looks like a game that some people will enjoy and others not. Personally, I loved it.

Dying Light

its so awesome. Its amazing. Its like Battlefield mixed with Dead Island and Mirrors Edge. Then as your character gets to the higher levels of the agility tree it basically turns into a first person spiderman game with guns and zombies.

Its also creep as heck, really gives you the chills especially when you venture out during the night and you get chased by those fast '28 Days' zombies. This game offers an experience that no other game does currently. Highly recommended.

Graphics are Crysis 3 quality.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor

I picked up the game on a whim when I saw it on sale on an online store, I'm glad I did.

I've always enjoyed games that give you a sense of freedom and really make you feel like you can do what you want. The Nemesis System sounds all good, but you wouldn't actually expect it to work as well as it is described in advertising. It does.
I spent hours making my own missions, promoting captains, assassinating others, and just playing with the system. Each Uruk captain has their own personality and a slew of strengths and weaknesses, making each encounter unique. There are even little touches, like a captain that escaped you previously remembering the encounter and commenting on it the next time you fight him.

There are also other miscellaneous collectibles and side missions, as to be expected from an open world game. The combat is in the same style as the Arkham Series, but a lot more flashy. By the end of the game, you feel like an absolute badass.

It took me about 20 hours to get 100% completion, with several hours just spent playing with the Nemesis system or fighting random Uruk.

The story is nothing special and its not really going to draw you in, but this is one of those games where the game mechanics themselves more than make up for it.

The game is definitely worth a play, and with the GOTY edition coming out, you could get it with the DLC for cheap at some point in the near future.

Deadlight

deadlight-554-610.jpg

Such a pretty game and such a good idea. Unfortunately the game ended up being just above average. It could have been great!

Deadlight is a zombie game. A puzzle platformer of sorts. You will be killing some zombies but the gameplay is more about figuring out how to move from screen to screen. It looks great and has some really good atmosphere. The story isn't too bad either.

However the game got progressively more difficult and towards the end you try something then it fails, press button to reload and do it all over again. I wish there wasn't instant death. See the main character can't swim, so if you land in water then you are dead. And the controls aren't very responsive at all. I'm not even going to talk about the illogical ending.

The game had such potential. The art direction is great. I can see what the creators wanted to achieve. They fell short though. It's still worth the play if you own it. It was one of the free XBox Live Games with Gold games.

Cities in Motion

cities-in-motion-13.jpg

"I really want to love this game, but I feel like it's punishing me for playing it. Games should make you feel relaxed, and shouldn't frustrate you. I constantly have this feeling that the game is buggy and isn't made super user friendly. That's sad, man, that's so sad."
That's a quote from one of the Steam reviews for the game and I agree completely.

I played so many hours of Transport Tycoon back in the day. It gave me hours of joy. It was a masterpiece and I thought Cities in Motion would be the same.

I was wrong.

In my friends list I've got 7 people who own and have played Cities in Motion. 3 couldn't reach one hour. 1 made it to just over an hour. 1 to 3.4 hours and then there's czc with 46.6 hours! So obviously the game appeals to some people at least.

My biggest annoyance is the user interface. It fights against you. I quit the game after two hours because for some reason I just couldn't select stops for my tram line anymore. I don't know if it's because of a bug or because I did something wrong. I just know that I just can't get that trime line to work at all. I got the one in the tutorial to work. I got bus lines to work. All kinds of things.

But I was stumped. And it was annoying. Even more so because earlier I was lying tram tracks and I got to a point where the game didn't want to continue laying tracks on the road that I selected. It would show green and I would click and it would make a sound and nothing would happen. I had to delete those tracks and follow a different route. I still don't know why.

It's frustrating. The game is fighting against me. And not in the right way. So I quit. 2 hours in. Czc, I take my hat off to you that you were able to get so many hours of hopefully fun filled game time out of Cities in Motion.

czc probably paused the game and forgot about it for a weekend... :D

I completely agree though, I loved TTD and thought this would be the same. After crying in a corner upon seeing the mess this game was I remembered about OpenTTD and went and downloaded and played it instead.

I'm sorry the game frustrated you solitude. I did actually enjoy playing.

I actually did play it and finish all the main scenarios.

I sometimes had lots of angry travelers.

I'm glad you enjoyed it czc! :) I see you played the second one too. I think I'll just stay away from that one.

Thats probably best, the second one lost all the charm I saw in the first one and was frustrating.

Hey Solitude I just finished the game and tend to agree with you on most points. The atmosphere is great, the story was interesting as well despite the dialogue lines being a bit iffy. The cheap deaths were annoying, there was one point near the end where I had to sprint through a collapsing building that was a true exercise in frustration due to bugginess and unresponsive controls. This became especially prevalent in the last stages of the game, rather than challenging it became frustrating. Funny enough I noticed that Jordan Mechner (of Prince of Persia fame) was one of those mentioned in the Special Thanks part of the credits, in many ways the annoying movement and jumping in the game reminded me of the original PoP!

Regarding the ending, see spoiler (and for those who haven't played it, it really is a spoiler)

Spoiler: show
I thought the ending was actually quite good, very sad really. The one illogical seeming part was I wondered why Randall didn't jump through the hole to get to the boat as well but then I was reminded of the fact that he couldn't swim!

Verdict: Despite the flaws its worth a play for the atmosphere and (when it works) the gameplay is quite fun

I also quite enjoyed it. And I too was heavily frustrated in that same area as you!

The ending would have been great in my opinion if he drops all his things and then tries to swim. I'm sure that swimming must be easier than taking on a big group of zombies. It just felt illogical. It could have been so great!
