Recommend Lan Games

So we all know that lan games are a thing of the past , and well I know there are the usual Fun ones we used to play
COD4
Unreal
Red Alert 2
team fortress

but I need some help , I have set up a small network for a bit of underprivileged kids with a series of Core 2 HP machines 2 gigs ram basic machines nothing fancy
and well I want to introduce them to the joy of multiplayer gaming

So i want to start a bit small and nothing I can think of will work and will be fun enough .

Should I consider something like Quake 2 or 3 but graphics are so very dated ( or maybe I'm just spoiled visually)

Or maybe some RTS type game

Any ideas are welcome , thanks guys
 
Is there any age restrictions on the games we can suggest ?

Serious Sam is always fun
Age of Empires 2
Warcraft 3
Quake & Unreal tournament like you said
Counterstrike 1.6
Battlefield 1942 (used to play with friends against bots)
 
While I agree, we both grew up on violent video games and came out just fine - violent video games do NOT cause kids to act out unless there are underlying mental causes as well.

Please do not give them Counter-Strike! It's the gaming equivalent of huffing glue.

Would Left 4 Dead 2 work? That's huge fun at LANs.
 
There are 7 boys between the ages of 13 and 17
I dont think the violent games are a issue , so no real age restriction.

The aim is to give them something to get into , much like how we fell in love with gaming
I have installed a old game called warzone which is a RTS in the same like as Supreme commander which they have taken to nicely

I think the real question I am asking is which mutliplayer game got you hooked , so I can introduce it to these little guys and introduce them to the social aspect of things.

I would rather have these guys debating the merits of Half life 2 and FF7 than thinking about other worldly stuff that is out of there control.
 
UT 2004 Can't go wrong with that.
Original Dota should also be good for them, good learning curve and highly addictive.
 
Why corrupt innocent kids with such games? I wouldn't recommend dota 2 to them they're gonna be exposed to the sometimes nasty online community. Maybe just dota 1. But then again, kids grow up so fast nowadays.

Warcraft 3 is a must. There are so many more interesting maps to choose from than DotA. Like the one with the Sheep, the RPG ones, Elemental Tower Defense etc.

Counter-Strike was a favourite while on lunch at college.

Yes! I have so many fond memories of this! Comedians of Warcraft, Russian Roullette, Pokemon Defense as well!
 
Yeah Warcraft 3 with a bunch of custom maps is awesome, they can try all the old Dota's if they want, Enfo's team survival & all the tower defense maps also.

Loved those. Green TD, TTW and Vamps were also favourites of mine.

James maybe you can make a good article out of it. What is good lan games when you do not have internet at a lan party :D
 
Ok so counter strike for FPS easy enough to get hold of , min spec requirements
Then warcraft cause I mods maps more easily accessable to me
RTS ???
Racing ???
Might as well add a fighting or brawler to the list ?

James btw that is a good idea for an article should create a thread and do and article on the top 6 results
 
Best multiplayer fighting game ever - Super Smash Bros for N64. OMG that game I literally played ALL day with my friends. It's also perfect for the younguns
