I have one, you have one.
If you remove the first letter, a bit remains.
If you remove the second, bit still remains.
After much trying, you might be able to remove the third one also, but it remains.
It dies hard!
 
The person who makes it has no need for it. The person who purchases it does not use it. The person who does use it does not know he or she is. What is it?

Well that's an alternative answer that I didn't know of then.

EDIT: Could be clearer to make the last sentence

Flippie and his wife are travelling in the veld late one night when their bakkie breaks down. Flippie gets out to go to a near by farm house to ask for help. He instructs his wife to lock all the doors and to not let anyone into the car. On his return he finds the car locked, his wife dead and a stranger in the car. How can this be?

She left the windows down.
 
After the husband left, she unlocked the car, made sweet sweet love to a stranger who walked by, then the stranger murdered her because he is mentally unstable. The stranger locked the car.
