Risen 2 Officially Confirmed

During the press conference at the gamescom 2010 in Cologne, Germany, Deep Silver confirmed officially that Piranha Bytes and Deep Silver are currently working on "Risen 2". Daniel Oberlerchner, brand manager of Deep Silver, also reported this in our forum.

While this is no big surprise for most people, it should discard any speculations and rumours about other projects (i.e. Gothic 5) currently developed by Piranha Bytes. The next game will definitely be a successor to Risen.

Yeah, yeah. It's old news by now but let's go for it. What changes would you like to see?

Feel free to share here as well as post in the official forum.

The thoughts I posted in the forum:

I suspect that most of what I intend to say has already been said, but... what I'd like to see in Risen 2 is simply just more of the same with a bit more expanding on the good. I want a bigger world, more armour, more quests, more faction; I'll explain each one in turn.

Bigger World

The thing I loved about Gothic 3 (shhh, I'm allowed to mention this) was the big, expansive world which you could explore. I loved finding new caves, hunting down the likes of Nefarius and other secluded individuals as well as scouring the ruins. I would like Risen 2 to have a large, explorable world as well.

A world in which you can find hidden treasures, lost mysteries, weapons, magics and other interesting goodies. A world that you could really just lose yourself in.

More Armour & Weapons

By this I just mean in the sense of diversity (I'll expand a bit more when I get to factions). I'd like hoods to go with mage robes, I'd like different types of mage robes depending on the acquired rank and specific mage faction as well as for the same to apply to the different factions such as a paladin, mercenary, rogue, etc.

I don't just want the same old faction armour either, let there be mithril, chainmail, platemail, dragonbone, etc armours. Let there be long robes, flowy battle robes which are part plate and part material. Let it boil down to individual player preference.

Let there be exotic weapons, like katana and scythes. Let mages have different staves depending on their personal preferences or faction (a staff of bone, crystal, wood, etc).

More Quests

This is a tough one, I know. But when I say more quests, I mean... Everyone loves the main storyline, everyone knows that that's what they'll have to get to... eventually. I like to postpone 'eventually' for as long as possible. I'd like to have a number of side-quests to do. I guess it's really just that simple. I have always loved the way Piranha Bytes implemented quests and more of those imaginative, enjoyable and immersive quests, please :D

Environment

I like the... 'adult' environment. Brothels, booze, swampweed, etc. Keep it dark, keep it grounded in a feeling of desperation.

Factions

Also a tough one. I want proper factions for each base class (warrior, mage, rogue). For the mages there should at least be good and evil choices or, perhaps in such a way that say... there's a monastery and later, as the protagonist becomes more and more evil or meets darker characters vying for power, he can eventually take over the monastery and change the way the novices are taught and who is in charge of the monastery (necromancers or other dark mages?) and let this have an impact on the world and the way others (even non-mages) interact with the player.

Let the warriors have the usual pallies/crusaders and mercenary counterparts.

Let rogues have their good ol' Robin Hood thieves and Assassin counterparts.

Let the protagonist, in each scenario, be capable of taking over (in some sense at least) and changing the course of those factions to suit his own agenda.

I guess more thought could be put into it but this is just off the top of my head. I want depth, I want everything I do to have an effect on the world and for NPCs to acknowledge it in some way.

Piranha Bytes know what they're doing, and I'm sure they're aware that they're onto a good thing so they will take the best suggestions and do with them what they feel will fit in.

All I want is MORE and for more good/evil choices to have an impact on the world.

Can't wait for Risen 2 :D

Thank you, Piranhas!

I agree with you on those points. It did lack verity.

And more types of spells. More hidden goodies that make you feel all awesome when you stumble upon it. I want the setting to be in the desert(I find the desert very romantic lol)

I want to see magic weapons that look unique.

Verity? :p

Agreed. Except for the bit about desert. I want me some ice and snow. Hell, give me G3's map and I'll be sorted as far as the world is concerned--deserts of sand and ice as well as forests.

I just hope they've realised Risen will sell and that they will make a massive mainland for Risen 2 and flesh it out with all sorts of quests and places to explore and with many different paths you can take after joining your preferred guild. It would give it so much replay value :)

I would love to play an rpg with an Arabian setting. Just think of it. Storming an evil sultans palace while a there is a sand storm going on. I am kinda bored with forests though. And I hate swamps:erm:

I would also love an Egyptian rpg(not like titans quest but like risen or crpg)

First one was pretty good. Looking forward to the second one.

I agree. I loved the first one, it was just over all too soon and there wasn't enough world to explore.

I think we can safely assume you want a Prince of Persia RPG :p

No no. I just like an Arabian setting. It has not yet been done in rpg games.

I think risen series has become the new gothic series.

Well, Gothic (1-3) will always live on in the hearts of the fans who fell in love with them. G4 has been reduced to a hack-and-slash clone not unlike Dungeon Siege or Titan Quest--entirely raping the mechanics, immersion and features that set the series apart from all other games.

Fortunately, the mechanics at least live on in Risen. I believe Piranha Bytes knows its on to a good thing and that they are the only company capable and willing to pull off everything that has stylised the original Gothic series and Risen. While the world I fell in love with has been sold-out, yes, at least some comfort can be found in Risen taking up the mantle.

It may be a niche market but it's a kind of RPG that market simply cannot live without :)
