I've been holding off on this game for ages now, glad to see they're stepping down on the griefers and hackers.

Over the weekend, the developers of open-world ex-zombie survival game Rust have deployed their newly-created anti-cheat software on the official game servers. The result? 4,621 banned players.P

The software, called CheatPunch, is similar to Valve's VAC system in that its bans are permanent and incontestable—if you're banned, you're banned. Period. No second chances.

As quoted from studio founder Garry Newman's blog:

We don't know how stable it's going to be, so we're testing it out on our official servers to make sure it all works before forcing it on everyone else. If you get kicked from the official servers with the message that you've been banned then you have been caught. You're a naughty boy. You know what you have done. You won't get unbanned. We know it was your 9 year old cousin. We know your computer got hijacked. We know that the CIA is getting you banned from all your games on Steam so you will join them in the hunt for aliens. We're aiming to get a site set up for people that have been banned so they can go and see proof that they've been caught.

Lol.

Several commenters voiced their concern about false positives—understandable, since we're talking about permanent bans instated by software that's still under testing. We're contacting Facepunch Studios to find out what measures, if any, they are taking to eliminate false positives, and will update this post should they respond.

Garry Newman's say of false positives:

We haven't seen any false positives yet. I've been checking everyone that has complained and haven't come across anything. In fact, it seems like the louder they shout about being innocent the longer they've been cheating. The one thing we don't want to do is ban innocent people, we try to collect as much irrefutable evidence as possible before banning someone.

We're going to be adding a system where people that legitimately feel like they've been banned for no reason can sign in and ask for a review.. and a human will review it. We probably won't be providing any evidence, but people will either get unbanned or a 'nope' and not be able to appeal again.

Good riddance!

This is brilliant, cheaters really don't deserve special treatment just ban them and move on. I still find those excuses listed funny, really the CIA banned you.

One slight change though. Instead of "cheatpunch" they should have called it : "DickPunchOfDeath" if the cheat ban works, I shall be more interested in testing out Rust

And yeah, the listed excuses are funny :-)

I couldn't agree more, If you cheat your a dick, and ultimately ruin the game for yourself...

Question : If you get banned, and you have paid for the game, is it not technically illegal to ban you? Im sure they could argue that they were not warned, and have now paid money for a service they cant use... Unless its in the T's and C's?

So did the other 99 players, but they paid to play the game and not be victims of cheating. Should we protect the 1 cheater or 99 other players not cheating?

Just because you paid doesn't give you the right to alter the game for you benefit. It's like when you mod your engine, ford doesn't have to cover the service contract if you alter their product.

Im in no way defending cheating so dont get me wrong there... But i hear what you saying, sort of modified warranty void scenario...

its like the dudes who hack their xbox. they may have paid for it (along with LIVE SUBS) but if they are caught, then get banned and lose live privs (despite having paid for them). As you say, violation of the T's and C's

I know, I just don't think they need a warning, maybe an appeal but no warning

in any game if you are cheating, hacking or what ever ban. Even if you bought the game, biggest spender ect ect if you cheat you should be banned. So often have i see a game not ban some people because they pay alot of cash then greed comes into play and then everyone has a reason not to be banned. Then the server becomes infested with cheaters making the game less fun.

I would even go on and if someone is found cheating in any game that runs via Steam they should block that user from all MP games that is linked to said Steam account.

Yes I know some cheaters will open separate accounts for the games they want to play but it would deter a large group. For me that is worth it.

Cheating has basically killed MP games for me.

When i was younger i played Warcraft 2... one mission i literally got down to one peon, and with that one little bugger i managed to rebuild and win the level... Once someone showed me the cheats, it made the game so boring and pointless i actually stopped playing it... It was a good lesson for me as to how cheats actually ruin the experience...

This, I reckon if you hack on one game you most likely hack on others.
I doubt someone would want to lose their whole game library just to be number 1 on the score sheet.

Looking at some guys library that would be a really expensive ban, sounds like a great punishement to prevent cheats.

Personally I don't think the system punishes cheaters enough . It's a despicable crime to cheat in MP.

Yeah I would be in full support of measures like this.

I'm really tempted to get this game now, but I'm wary of these early access things... Is it really worth it at this stage or should I wait?

Not sure, but doesn't it only get pricier closer to the final release? If that is the case I'd suggest you jump on to the wagon now.
