SA comic and geek conventions you should know about

This year, I'll try to attend as many of these as I possibly can. I've never been to Upcon and Icon, and I am pretty keen to see KinCon.

Also, Cosmic Comics in JHB are giving away R50 vouchers to people who attend FCBD at their store.

I went to UPCON in my first year, I'm thinking of going this year. Any other takers?

Glad to see KIN CON is getting a mention - the lady behind it has been putting in a ton of effort.

I'm going to pop up to Jo'burg to check it out :)

Oh cool, I also want to check that out. I saw, that chick is one the MOVE on Facebook with promoting this event. She tells you everything, even like when the music should stop at night. I like that.

Yeah, which is why this Comicon noob could've taken a page from her book and learned a thing or two. KIN CON has the potential to go somewhere, and is the logical starting point for something to get big. Besides which, she's also a cosplayer, known anime/gaming geek to those of us in the community, so we know that what she would like to see at a mini-con will most likely be the same thing we want to see at a mini-con - at the same time she's not arrogant enough to take it for granted.

If that's not enough, we already know AnimeWORX is going to be represented there - that seals the deal for me.

Comicon claimed it was going to be big before having to back off and say that it's probably not, or it's a networking event, or etc etc. Dunno, I've lost track of what he was trying to say.

Yeah, she has a nice foot in the door and I think she can actually grow this quite nicely, pending the success of her event. I'll maybe go check it out.

We are trying to get official comment and information. So far all we have to go on is one irate person posting about how it was cancelled and blaming SA's gaming journalists for the fail.

https://www.facebook.com/ComiconSA

Lazygamer has an article: http://www.lazygamer.net/general-news/looks-like-comic-con-south-africa-was-a-bust/

If the irate person was related to the organiser, it's his own fault it failed. And he shouldn't be railing at the gaming journo's, since it was the community that prodded them to look into things. It's their own fail, and no one elses.

EDIT - I checked out the rager's post - he quite obviously wasn't following the entire tale.

So sad...there was so much potential but from the beginning it seemed a little dodgey, lets hope going forward there will be a real 1 soon.

I saw Lazygamer's article; it's lacking an official comment from the organisers and no real source on the info that the event was cancelled - other than an irate post by a belligerent person who has his facts wrong and goes on to blame SA's gaming journalists for the event being a failure and insults gamers to boot.

Of course, I don't doubt that the event was cancelled in the end - we just want to get some more details on what happened, to round off the coverage on this debacle.

There's a discussion thread over on the Facebook page that's getting amusingly heated now: https://www.facebook.com/ComiconSA

Questions were asked because they whole thing sounded dodgy from the start. Now someone is angry because it was cancelled and some one lost some money.

i still dont get what happened. i see that one dude is blaming the forums/press for it not doing well when the whole event was a fail to begin with

I'm part of that discussion at the moment. And it's only heated because the dude is busy calling gamers something along the lines of "cave dwellers who never leave mom's basement" (paraphrased) and just generally being unpleasant.

Also, one of the local cosplayers also confirmed the cancellation. Without warning apparently, Friday night. Not official, of course.

yea that Gert Hendrik Oosthuizen dude dose not have the facts right. Im a gamer i dont live in a cave... staying on the stereo type is fail.

He's an angry little man who obviously had some hand in the organization of the event and invested some money. Needless to say it flopped and he's raging like a rabid dog because he lost some money. Only excuse he can come up with is the "bad" journalists that ruined the whole event. Lets look at some of the other factors before we blame the journalist.

* Too short a notice.
* Aparently Marvell SA was a sponsor.
* R200 entrance fee.
* Bad area to host it (according to people in CPT)
* Women get in free if they cosplayed.

Blame shift...

Sigh the whole thing was a fail. If he put more than a cent into this event he was stupid. Like you said short notice and then even with the out cry of people there was still not information of the event. No count down no updates nothing and then expecting people to run to him and get free press. Im sorry this dude must wake up, thinking things will come easy is fail. There is so much more that could have been done. These fail cakes that tryed hosting this event must take not of the real hard working people that organize the other geek, comic, anime, cosplay, ect events and take notes.

Its still kinda sad on what they did and FAILed hard at. Looking forward to the other events coming up this year.
