Despite the controversy which followed the Comic Con SA announcement, it’s great to see the interest and buzz with local comic book fans and industry members.
If you’re interested in attending some comic book events in South Africa, there are a number of upcoming conventions and events which you should check out.
The University of Pretoria hosts a yearly comic book and geek-culture event called Upcon, and the 2013 event is one to take note of.
Features of Upcon 2013 include:

- Android Netrunner – Android/Netrunner SA Community
- Boardgames – Skycastle Games
- Cosplay competition – A.I. Fest
- Geek auction – this time with less dates and more bartering
- Magic the Gathering: Pro Tour Qualifier (“Friends”) – Outer Limits Hatfield & Melville
- Magic the Gathering: World Magic Cup Qualifier – Outer Limits Hatfield & Melville
- Role-playing modules

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)
Free Comic Book Day has become a global phenomenon, and now South African comic fans can get in on the action.
Most comic book stores around South Africa will be partaking in Free Comic Book Day 2013, which will include free comics, discounted products and some other great happenings, which will vary from store to store.
When: 4 May 2013
Where: Countrywide – check local comic book stores.
Icon is a great event which takes place in July every year for Johannesburg comic-book and geek-culture fans.
In addition to comics and graphic novels, the event features tabletop role-playing, board games, wargaming, assorted card games, anime screenings, LARPing, and cosplay among other activities.
More is to be announced about Icon 2013, but keep your eyes out for the details when they emerge.
KIN-CON (25 May)
Another upcoming event is that of KinCon 2013.
The event is a celebration of geeks, nerds and otaku, and will feature a number of exhibitors and cool activities to check out.

Where: Blairgowrie Recreation Centre, Randburg
Cost: R30 for the full day
While rAge is well known among the community for its showcase of the latest video games and a massive LAN, an overlooked aspect of the event is its comic, geek, and cosplay activities.
When: 4 – 6 October 2013
Where: Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg
