SA Customs clears SterKinekor

Just trying to be fair to SK. It looks like they are being blamed unfairly here. Just because a guy on hellopeter said that Sk's lawyers are having his game detained does not make it true.

I have not come across any evidence that SK is involved. I am not saying they are innocent, just that we should be careful about accusations. I would implore any one with evidence supporting these accusations to get in touch with me on this one.

I have had enough hassles with government bodies such as home affairs and SAPS to believe that it is the usual SA government kak at play here.

Whether or not SK is overcharging for its games is another issue completely.

So Customs just suddenly decides last week that they are going to start targetting shopto.net shipments?? This isn't just one guy from what I have been reading its quite a few people especially in Durban who are having issues. I smell a rat and I don't believe a word of what SK is saying. For me to believe them they would have to proof it. With them its guilty until proven otherwise for me. I simply won't trust them and have no reason to do so considering their other business practices.

I hate that these things can happen. We get ripped off by monopolies in this country time and time again.

The same with importing cars, you can't unless you are willing to pay about 175% of the cars value on nothing but taxes.

Give us a break!!

I would love to hear SK's explanation as to why they charge so much for games.

The fact that it works out cheaper for SA consumers to import games independently from an international retailer (who add markup), pay vat, delivery and taxes than it costs SterKinekor to import in bulk at a wholesale price is just astounding

This is exactly what I can't understand either.

It is a bit of a mystery.

I am trying to set up a meeting with an SK rep to give them a chance to explain their situation

They charge so much because they can, its a s simple as that!!
Unfortunatly they arn't bound by law to charge reasonable prices, so they charge whatever they like!!

I think the Joker may be right. But, it is only fair to at least give them an opportunity to explain themselves. There may be hidden costs that we are unaware of, although I cant imagine what they might be

I am right:D
Little example, Clicks sells a big box of Ferrera Roche for R90 but cna sells the exact same box for R140...WHY???? Cna charges R50 more because they can.
We are mindless slaves and we'll pay whatever companies charge for their products.

He went on to elaborate, revealing that 18 games came through customs in the space of a few days; all from one source: Shopto.net. He explained that a focused amount of similar imports coming from a single source automatically led to the suspicion that the goods may be pirated. He assured us that this is fairly standard practice at SA customs

That seems a pretty reasonable explanation.
An influx of the same goods at the same time, would naturally raise suspicion.
But next time they should just check the web and see that it's one of the more sought after games :p

MyGaming catches up with Customs official

SA Customs clears SterKinekor

Thanks for clearing it up TM.

They could have just check on the web and seen that shopto.net is a legitimate business. Idiots.
lol.. do you realise how ridiculous that sounds?
It is their job to make sure illegal items do not enter into the country, and their explanation is perfectly plausible.

By your definition, I could create a website for my business and if anything (guns, drugs, etc) comes into the country destined for my business it is auto-legit, because they checked for my legitimate business on the web. Sorry, but that argument fails.

Shopto.net isn't just some small business. Its one of the biggest online retailer in the UK. Do they also stop TakeTWo and BT games shipments??;) This is not a no name brand business/website. There's no reason why they need to send it to SAFACT to be able to verify that its not pirate goods, if they need to do that they are incompetent imho.

a Quick inspection of the contents of the package and checking the source of the shipment would clear it up.

I disagree. I never heard of shopto.net before this. So, who are they again? Once again, perception is key, what is important for you and unacceptable for you, may not be for me. That's what opinion and to a degree, choice, is about.

There is something called processes and procedures, like sending it to SAFACT. I am sure BT and Take2 will also be scrutinized if there is a substantial increase in numbers that might kick off a red flag. Who are we to say it doesn't happen? Do you know for a fact? I don't know.

The only reason this is made so much HooHaa over is due to a HelloPeter post and the virtual mob latching on to it, simply believing everything at face value, without gathering the facts.

We already have so many grey and pirated items in South Africa, it must be governed by a stringent and strict process. Plus, they deal with international companies, so a quick, i.e. simple check, won't do. That's why the processes and procedures are there. To make sure everything is followed by the book, audited and recordable. If not, you'd hear people going up in arms about THAT again.

And yes, I have imported stuff myself too and have also had items held for 2 weeks+ at customs while waiting for it to clear. It just so happened there were other similar items imported by other parties, which made them look a bit deeper into my import too.
Standard OP imo.

I had also never heard of shopto.net until very recently. I'm glad I found out about them because I plan to buy from them very soon.
