I think above all else, the ladies in the forum should have a big say in this.
Among guys, it's fine to swear like a sailor, but I feel like a bit of a toss if there's ladies around while okes are swearing. It's not cool hey :/
Yes, that's what decades of feminism was aiming to promote : special treatment of women.
Be that as it may...I feel bad using foul language around ladies, but it's fine around guys. Ergo, they are more affected by it than we are - since we're fine with it amongst ourselves.
How the hell is it about them if
you're the one feeling bad using it around them?
Here's a tip : If you don't want to swear around a certain gender, don't. But don't suggest that everyone follow your lead or that the forum should change its rules to cater to your preferences just because you're prudish.
Since there are more males than females on here, we run a monopoly. So where's the fairness in that? If guys get 50% of the vote (between the 500 of us) and girls get 50% of the vote (between the 10 of them) then it's unfair to the individuals, but fair on the gender discrimination.
Yeah, I was never really a fan of individual discrimination.
Otherwise It's as fair as 9 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what's for dinner.
The sheep could always just leave?
There are many ways to express yourself that exclude swearing, context or no.
Indeed. And note how one can be utterly offensive without resorting to expletives of any kind. Conclusion : it's not the words but what's actually being said.
Of course, you're free to freak out over someone making a reference to bowel movements if you wish, but please do understand that it has no rational basis whatsoever.
We all know my stance on the swearing in the forums. But why stop there? Why not have a poll on nudity.. it's "just naked bodies, we all have one"... then extend it to porn... hey, it's just sex right - very natural thing indeed.
Well, considering the fact that sex scenes are starting to be introduced into games, discussing them is only natural given the nature of the forum. It is a gaming forum after all.
Standards need to be set, a line need to be drawn. Personally, I see that swearing nearly always brings anger and aggression towards others. I understand that people get frustrated and swear as an outburst, but is Backspace such a hard thing to do after you've let the agression out? And usually those that can't afford a backspace are emotionally attached (in an aggressive way) and then the whole topic goes that way.
But anyway, things to consider.
Same can be said for any post, including this one. Instead of ranting about the latest outrage, why don't you just delete it all instead of clicking the post button. Makes the forum a much more pleasant place, no?
And think about this : This is a gaming forum. We play games. Games with profanity. Games with killing and murder. Games with gratuitous and graphic displays of violence. Games with nudity. And yet somehow the profanity is the most offensive part? lol?
Show me a 13 year old who hasn't heard a good majority of the words used on this forum. People keep talking about keeping it "PG-13", but the cat's out of the bag, I'm afraid. (And as a matter of curiosity, does anyone honestly think that children younger than 13 are actually reading or partaking in these forums?)
And finally consider the fact that the stupid swearing filter is getting in the way of valid conversation. It keeps blocking out entirely non-profane words. Why should I have to sift through a bunch of asterisks every second post just to figure out what someone was saying? How is it reasonable that anyone expect me to do this just to participate in the forum? I'd argue that the swearing filter ON is more likely to reduce the reader base compared to the few wet blankets who'd boycott the site just because someone mentioned urine.
P.S. This post was purposely written in an antagonistic style in order to show that when considering what is offensive and what is not, that what someone says is far more important than the words they choose to say it.
