If i wanted this to turn into a debate on the functionality of Democracy i would have started thread. Personally im more of a "Why do you have to do it? Becuase i ****ing said so..." kinda guy. If we are not going to listen to what the majority of people want then why have a poll in the first place. Why not just listen to the minority and leave the filter on. Ive said my piece.

Why not handle it like the government does ? Let most threads follow the majority rule and then let there be a decision on which few threads there are no swearing to be allowed. These threads will be however be decided upon by the majority though and probably be not really relevant, but at least the minority also feel like they counted for something. :)

I'm waiting with bated breath for you to explain how using the most biased non-probability sampling technique yields valid conclusions that should be used to set the standards for the broadest appeal of this forum.

I'm waiting with bated breath for you to explain why censorship is good.

:P

FB - Why are you being so antagonistic? It's a bloody poll ..... if you're a prude, vote accordingly, if not, then what is your point in here?

MyGaming isn't a democracy :p myGaming is mainly run by Tinman - it's his dictatorship ultimately - as with all companies etc etc.

I am sure Tinman is so fed up for this discussion he just wants to get it sorted. So lets sort it out and get back on track.

Most of us are. So hurry up and remove the rule, so I can start arguing over what is and isnt excessive :p ... **** it, lets start that argument now!

If any EXCESSIVE or ABUSIVE swearing does occur one of the mods should be contacted

Whats the difference between saying *** once, and *** 100 times

The point is to make the site as accessible as possible, at least this is what Tinman alluded to. Since this is a private forum, it already has forms of control that rival straight up censorship of bad language. This would simply be a more visible enforcement of the same kind of rules that already exist to govern forum behaviour.

Getting rid of bad language by filtering it is commonplace and I honestly can't see how having it could offend people in nearly the same way as swearing does. People want to swear and not have it filtered, good for them, they can go to a chan or some other anonymous board that isn't community oriented. Forums like this exist to cater for the broadest amount of people possible, not to give the most and loudest barkers what they want.

So we should let the petty minority dictate the rules, then? I'm not sure how this is better than letting the majority do so.

I'm also not at all convinced that swearing is objectively offensive.

I honestly see swearing as offensive when its aimed at me... otherwise i see it as normal talk

Swearing is by definition offensive. The burden of proof lies with you to show that it isn't, and to prove relativism.

And this isn't 'catering to a minority' can you not understand this, it is very clear. You set a standard for conduct that the most people possible will accept. It is about including everyone, not playing favorites. Swearing is one of the things that a lot of people don't accept, and which is generally socially unacceptable, especially in large group interactions. Not being able to swear in a social environment which involves discussing a love for video games is something that pretty much everyone except those people in denial and who have Tourette's can accept.

Anway, I'm done. If I have to deal with explaining why swearing is bad, well let's just say I don't feel the need to be a parent quite yet.

+1

I'm voting for 'swearing in context' though. Sometimes the occasional ****, ****, or ***donkey***** can be rather cathartic.

Which is why most of the votes are for keeping it in context .... it's not about turning it into a free for all, in fact, it never was a free for all. God, I find myself agreeing with Azimuth on this one, I'm also not convinced that swearing is objectively offensive, especially on a gaming forum. I mean, do we have families browsing the site on a Sunday or something? Doubtful.

Oh, the irony.

Now, can we stick to the topic at hand, please?

it's the damn frustration mkay ........

Logical fallacy, sausage. You can't prove what something isn't.

Quite on the contrary, semper necessitas probandi incumbit ei qui agit. Please explain why swearing is offensive. And "just because" isn't an explanation, nor - by your own standards - is "because they said so".

And I'd say that anyone defending pointless Victorian morality is in denial.

Nudity is not offensive as well? Can you prove that nudity is offensive? Nope, naked chick pics allowed on mygaming!

Ok, that was just being silly. I think the points are made, and the vote is majority to swearing allowed - can we lock this thread and get back to gaming topics?

I'm thinking about it as the poll has spoken for itself, but there's no need for censorship if there's still a sensible debate going.

As long as it's all above board then it's all good.
