No. Don't lock the thread.

This debate is not over, if kept civil.

There are two sides to this coin and both have valid (read excellent) points.

First read, then understand the posts before otiose comments a thrown about. That goes for both sides...

/feel the luurve :)

+1

I'm voting for 'swearing in context' though. Sometimes the occasional ****, ****, or ***donkey***** can be rather cathartic.

What bothers me about this entire discussion.... everyone seems to go on like the swearing was completely out of hand, like something out of a B-Movie where the writer things adding a **** here and a **** there makes up for the general lack of plot. This forum wasn't like that. This entire discussion is here because 12 or 10 or 6 people started moaning about the odd swear word here and there. They complained about it so often that Tinman, slave to the system he is, had no choice but to activate said **** filter. Ive said it before, on a forum where 100 of posts are posted every day how is 6 or 10 incidents in a week, that 7000 posts, how does that make it a serious problem? Lets say 10 out of those 7000 posts had profane, vulgar or rude words in them, that is (and my maths sucks so feel free to crucify me if im off) about 0.14% of all posts on this forum. Hardly an swearing epidemic. Lets say for arguments say there are only 1000 posts in the forum proper and there where 10 reported posts of swearing or what have you (TK excluded) ever week, that is still just 1% of all the post in the forum for an entire week that are seen as vulgar, rude or whatever. I say again, hardly an epidemic.

It's 15 pages in, what is going to be said has already been said. What is the point of those same points just being regurgitated over and over again? It's keeping/getting people riled up and IMO that is doing more harm to this forum than any amount of swearing ever will do. Just take a look at the more senior members dropping like flies or thinking about it ;)

Nudity is not offensive as well? Can you prove that nudity is offensive? Nope, naked chick pics allowed on mygaming!

Ok, that was just being silly. I think the points are made, and the vote is majority to swearing allowed - can we lock this thread and get back to gaming topics?

First sensible thing anybody has posted in the duration of this stupid ****ing thead

So we ban swearing. What next? Oh, well, so-and-so is offended by homosexuals, so no talking about any of that. Oh, and so-and-so is a creationist, so please don't talk about science. Oh, and so-and-so is a conservative, so none of this liberal bull****, please.

It's really irritating when people try and take a simple, straightforward premise on one very specific topic to mostly irrelevant extremes, isn't it?

And then people cry foul about how their viewpoints are being censored.

I do understand your point though. Maybe it should be left to play itself out for another day or so and then locked before its evil animosity spreads to the other sub-forums.

If we're talking about swearing in the context of gaming (which is, I think, what this forum is about) then it's cool. Likewise, if we're talking about homosexuality or racism in gaming (the latter has already popped up a few times here) it's just as cool.

However, if someone chucks in a '****' or a 'mother****er' just to be provocative, as I'm sure would be the context of such comments about homosexuality/creationism/etc., then that is most certainly not cool.

You can't lump censorship of swearing into quite the same category as those other taboos.

RustPuppet, these discussions usually die a natural death soon enough anyway.

I know, but we have to consider what's best for the overall vibe of the forum. I'd rather have two members send me snotty PMs about what a conservative fascist I am than have a hundred members close their MyGaming browser tab with a bad taste in their mouths.

Read my post again. I think you missed something in it. :P

And not return....

Let me put it in a way you can understand:

[lol]Nudity is not offensive as well? Can you prove that nudity is offensive? Nope, naked chick pics allowed on mygaming! [/lol] :p

Nevermind me then. It seems chivalry is seen as a weakness.
Like I said. You wanna behave that way, that's fine. But don't expect me to also behave like that just because you do.

Sounds very ANC attitude like :p
Yes, because a country and the voluntary participation in the forum are really identical.

I said the sheep could leave because if people are really bothered about swearing, they don't HAVE to be here. We don't stop discussing things like the opening of MW2, so why should we have to all walk around on best behaviour when it comes to language?

This shows the point of drawing a line. There is nudity on TV, games - we're all naked under our clothes - why cant we post nude pictures on the forums? Sex is also natural, in games, on tv... internet has tons of that too. Why cant we post porn here? These arguments against and for swearing apply to these topic. How can you justify swearing and not nudity, not sex? Some people are offended - bah, some people are offended with swearing. It's distasteful.. why, I feel that way about swearing too. "It's the rule" - well, that was with the swearing too. Ultimately a line needs to be drawn. This example is a little bit extreme - but it highlights a point because it's extreme.
Swearwords are, as the name suggests, words. Words are used for communication. Communication is defined as the exchanging of ideas between two sapient individuals.

This is a forum. We're hear to talk to each other. We aren't here to post footage of our bedroom exploits. That's where the difference lies.

So lets post some gore and nudity, and some sex too... hey, it's in the games!
Nope. Those things have no relevance to the forum itself. Communication, and discussion of these topics within the context of their appearance in the game, is indeed relevant.

All 13 year old have seen themselves naked, does this justify child porn on the site? Of course not.. unless it's used in context? of course not. Rules (and laws) are set.
It does disprove the notion that filtering swearing is somehow going to be "pg-13".

Ahem, and I quote:

"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."
Yeah, that's the standard vBulletin EULA, designed to cover the arse of every forum hoster everywhere. Do you really think mygaming wrote all that legalese?

The swear filter will be turned off. The poll has been up for almost a week now, and it seems that the majority of active users have cast their vote.

THE COMMUNITY HAS SPOKEN! (Done with deep, rumbling operatic voice)

This does mean that we will have to moderate rude and antagonistic behavior and language closely. Swearing will not be tolerated when it is done aggressively towards another member.

Permissible swearing

Guitar Hero is a **** game :P

Impermissible swearing

Rustpuppet is a ****ing idiot.

While there have been valid points made on both sides, I think the best way forward is to allow the community to moderate itself as much as possible.

If someone finds a post offensive, the best thing to do is PM the offending person, explain that that sort of language or behavior bothers them, and hopefully, like adults, they can come to an understanding. They should also notify a moderator when this happens.

No one wants to be heavily governed by mods, so lets see if we can play nice without having to resort to hard line censorship.

Those in favor of swearing, I urge you to respect those around you, and avoid swearing where possible. Ideally, we should be allowed to swear, but do so rarely and in manner which is least offensive.

THE TRIBE HAS SPOKEN
