Sid Meier's Civilization heads Beyond Earth

Spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri?

I keep throwing money at the screen, but nothing is happening!

Throw more ... :p

But yeah ... I've been waiting for an Alpha Centauri successor for yea ... errr ... decades now. Just as long as they don't use the same retarded diplomacy system they currently have in Civ 5.

They've already said this won't be like Alpha Centauri, but its own game entirely. The details sound good so far, though.

Yeah, apparently they lost the rights to Alpha Centauri a while back. I've been dying for a future civ game for ages now. I know it's a pipe dream, but I would have loved to have seen the return of wonder/project movies. AC had some of the best narration/quotes and imagery I'd seen in a video game.

I still remember things like the cloning vats project which showed you the inside of factory sorting small chickens, the maritime doctrine with the sub etc.

So good!

That's fine by me - what I should probably have stated a little more clearly is that - as much as I loved Alpha Centauri - it's a bit too dated to play and enjoy now, so I've been hankering for something newer. It's much the same as how I can't go back to playing Civ 2 and 4, even though they are technically my favourites of the series.

Which is why the words "spiritual successor" that Gaz used earlier are so appropriate.

I'd love it if the Firaxis team could get their paws on the Master of Orion franchise somehow - I've been looking for a proper successor that that series as well for ages now.

What they need to do is storm bitComposer Games' offices and seize the Jagged Alliance IP so someone who actually understands how turn based games should work can finally take a shot at resurrecting that franchise.

And yeah it's not going to be AC, but Firaxis is my favourite dev and I thin Sid is one of the best designers ever. So whatever they make i'm pretty certain it'll be quality.

I definitely see the Firaxis team as the current masters of any type of turn-based titles, for sure.

I'm actually tempted to reinstall AC and give it a run-through just for old-times' sake.

It's more like - this fudging friendship thing they have going now. And the denouncements that don't really seem to do anything ... it's kind of like a kindergarten squabble. You say something nasty to me, so I say something nasty back.

Civ 2 was easy to understand ... you had truces, non-aggression pacts, mutual defense treaties, and full on alliances. And it was understood that under a mutual defense, if you attacked someone, your partner didn't pitch in, because whatever happened was your own fault.

In Civ 5, I can't get anyone to attack me ... ever. And if I'm busy watching out for my approval ratings, that makes my games pretty damn boring.

Walking into someone's territory requires a declaration of war ... in older games I could provoke them by occasionally wandering into their territory. Or manipulate them in other ways. Sometimes just massing troops on their border was enough to send the aggressive ones over the edge. And I really did prefer the cultural system in Civ 4 as well ... where you could simply occupy territory by being culturally "stronger" than your neighbour. Which half the time was enough to get them to attack you as well.

Alpha Centauri, where have you been all these years? :D

4.3 light-years away in the constellation of Centaurus. More or less.

I'm really looking forward to Beyond Earth. I recently picked up Civ V and am waiting for the expansions to go on sale. i don't know why I didn't pick up this series before but I'm definitely hooked now.

As a MASSIVE civ fan if you think vanilla Civ V is good, then the expansions will will blow your mind away.

I've been playing Civ ... in one form or another, since 1994. Civ 5 won't get my vote as the best in the series (that belongs to 4 in my books), but the expansions did a lot to improve things. They're well worth picking up - and I didn't even wait for sales :D

For a long time Civ 2 was my favourite. Number 4 was great, but for me personally I think Civilization 5 with expansions is probably my favourite civ of all time.

Out of all Firaxis' games though Alpha Centauri takes it for me.

I'm seriously excited for this game. I love Civ V and as a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri, this makes me positively giddy.

What I really want is a successor to Master of Magic. Still the best 4X game ever released, IMO.

I agree completely. I don't know if you know but there's a spiritual successor to Master of Magic coming out called Worlds of Magic. Plus it's looking good!
