Signature sizes reminder

James

MyGaming Alumnus
Hi everyone,

We have noticed that there are some ignoring the rules regarding signatures, specifically the maximum image dimensions.

Please revise the rules below and ensure you are in accordance.

Avatars and signatures rules

1. Avatars may not consist of any pornographic or inappropriate material.
2. Signatures may not be multileveled.
3. Signatures may consist of a maximum of one image no larger than 500 width and 90 height.
4. No Flash/animated signatures.

The full rules for the MyGaming forum can be found here: MyGaming Forum rules

Regards,

James

I don't think you can even upload a Flash signature on the system.

Regardless, I'll say no.

The reasoning behind it is that the Flash plugin loves to crash, it will increase page load times, and animated signatures can be very annoying.

I see, I did not test it just yet, just saw a few insane animated signatures on other sites and wondered if we are allowed to use them. It definitely increases the loading time too. :)

Could you provide an example of a multileveled signature please, sorry for being such a nuisance.

Hehe, I think sycogrim's signature is an example...

His is text however, so it's not too annoying; although I must suggest putting blog entries and YouTube playlists on the same line syco ;)

We are a bit more relaxed on the 'multi-levelled' part as long as it doesn't get out of hand; i.e. 10 lines of links, quotes, and bright red inspirational song lyrics.

It's the giant images that are more of a problem. They make the forum appear cluttered and distract from the reason people come here, the conversational content.

500 width and 90 height should be enough to personalise your posts :)

500x90 you say James?

I think mine is small enough.

Haha well there goes the idea of having two images in my sig. I once started a thread in Off Topic asking how to do it since every time I try, it told me that it wasn't possible. So I don't know how some of you did it. At least now I see that it's not allowed so that makes it understandable.

@Crzwaco: Yeah, I would say yours is fine, even though it's slightly outside of the height boundaries. The funny quote is also cool.

I understand that a number of these automatic signature generation sites don't produce things to the exact dimensions we have stipulated.

The point is, we wanted to remind people that there are size limits on signatures so we can keep the forums from being cluttered.

People are always going to push the boundaries, but we need to set a size limit so that when the really annoying and ugly signatures pop up, we can politely remind folks of the size rules and give them the opportunity to tone it down a bit.

Somewhere around here I saw a gigantic signature saying 'Fucking awesome!'; I was a bit busy at the time otherwise I'd have PM'd the guy then.

As an example, that would quickly become an eyesore.

Haha; do I have to approve everyone's signatures now?

As long as it isn't humongous and annoying ;)

Can't you just add a line limit to the signatures? Then people will have to make the picture fit into the line limit with the writing or won't it work?.

Haha okay cool/

Yeah I hope this guy changes his sig its like half a page long.http://mygaming.co.za/forum/member.php/3563-OGBuzz

Yeah, this is an example of the kind of thing we don't want.

In the forum back-end I can't limit signatures by line count. I have limited it to 200 characters which should be more than enough.

Because a lot of signatures are pulled from external sources using the tag, we can't automatically control the sizes. We can't disable the tag only for signatures either, disabling would have a forum wide effect.

We also wouldn't want to prevent sigs from external sources, as many people use those automatic stats generation signatures.

We're just going to have to rely on good old fashioned common sense.

Repeat transgressions will result in a temporary signature removal for the offending user.

We're not at that point yet; I'm starting out by asking nicely :P
