Single Player vs Multi Player games?

Hey all,

Just curious to hear what type of gamers we have here in the community. Are there some of you who play SP or MP games exclusively? And if you do, whats the reasoning behind it?

A bit about why I ask this question:

My choice for the past couple of years have been online multi player games, with the top 2 (if I look at hours clocked) being CSGO and WoW. For the past week or so I've taken a bit of break from gaming (IRL responsibilities) keep in mind I haven't gone this long without games in a very long time, this break made me have sort of an epiphany.... Multi player games are generally only fun in the beginning, when you're still a noob, with a kill death ratio 2-20(Lets use FPS games in this example, I can write a great wall of text for the effect MMO/Grinding type of games have on me, but I'll spare you:P), you don't care about the 20 deaths, all you remember is the glorious feeling accompanying those 2 frags you got, because for a few brief moments you outwitted or out smarted and actual person on the internet.

But now as you get better at the game, those glorious feelings you got in the beginning are now replaced by feelings of frustration, because fragging other people now becomes the norm so its no longer accompanied by that "high" feeling of pwning some poor bastard, instead the slightest mistake you make frustrates the living shit out of you.

So I guess what I'm getting at is that somewhere a long the line I forgot that we game to have fun, there's way to much competitiveness in online games these days, my competitive personality is getting an overdose, I mean its not like I want to be a pro gamer, so why go through these motions?

Maybe its just a phase, but I decided I'm sticking to story driven single player type games for the foreseeable future, anyone else every went through something like this before?

I mainly enjoy SP games, but will often dabble in some MP action.
But i prefer a good RPG.(not the one that goes BOOM!!!)

Prefer SP. I've never really gotten into MP games, mostly for the same reason I don't enjoy most FPS, racing or fighting games. It's very repetitive. Increasing my ranks is not enough motivation for me to do the same things over and over and over.

There are very few SP games that I will sit through and play it from start to end. GTA, Assassins Creed and Metal Gear Solid are some titles that I played SP.

But gaming with other people and interacting with people from different parts of the world is what makes gaming fun and enjoyable for me!

I enjoy a different a multiplayer, couch multiplayer.
It all started in the good old days of highschool when I discovered the n64 and games like SSB, Mario kart, Mario Party, Pokemon Rumble etc. Would literally spend entire days playing those games.

I played dota and dota 2 recently for what's been 8 years now. Didn't like the massive timesink and the person it made me become and purged it all together.

Now I only play SP.

I prefer a good SP title, however what irritates the shit out of me is forced co-op or forced MP. I do enjoy MP titles like CS, Payday, etc though.

SP over MP.

To get any fun in MP, one should practise and train to get more or less enjoyable game, unless carefully designed.

MP games tend to get old with time.

Games like CS/Dota require serious time investment to get fun from it. On other hand, Robocraft provides easy entrance and learning curve.

Some MP games implement SP elements, like Guild Wars, which I find most favourable.

I love SP games. But MP(especially online) satisfies an urge to win that no SP game can ever come close to emulating no matter how good.

I think that they satisfy different desires that we require from games.

I love me local/co-op, not sure if that counts as Multiplayer. Its why I have 2 capable gaming pc's side by side. Friday night is "game night" and my mate comes over and we kick things off with Fifa 13 (got it free, don't judge! Its an awesome experience vs a friend :D). Then we either play F1 or Insurgency or Left4Dead or Payday2, used to play Bf3 but got over it (dabbled in BF4 but it is sh!te). Then we end the night on Fifa again. We have an ongoing "cup" going hehe.

I MUCH prefer this kind of Multiplayer over the usual MP...but don't get me wrong, I still jam CS:GO in my spare time...But ever since playing in Varsity I've never let it get serious. I've been in clans and done the "serious gaming", but even then I never let it get as you say...frustrating. If a game gets like that, you put it aside and you move on. Works for me :)

Agreed. Had loads of fun with Co op. Finished orcs must die 2 in one sitting [emoji1]. Planning on playing the portal 2 Co op next. Loved the single player part of it. Will get to that in the next holiday :)

Single Player or Co-op only, MP is limited to playing against friends only...

Reason = cheaters and hackers, nothing make me lose interest in a game as quick as finding someone that run/shoot through walls.

Ah you won't be disappointed with portal 2 co-op, very cool stuff :)

Thing for me is I enjoy Multiplayer. It tickles the competitive nature in me and very easy to jump into a game, play for 30mins and call it a night. Problem I find with SP is after 30mins it feels like u just getting into it. But ironically now im trying to clear my Steam backlog, so jamming a lot more SP games atm.

Singleplayer for me, mostly. I prefer it.

I usually only play MP when I can psychically see the person (so I can punch them when they be a d**s :p)

Lol I have been to a few lans back in the day when this sort of thing use to happen. Ragers calling each other cheats and puffing. But all gas and smoke, with gamers rot thrown in for good measure.

Hahaha, I too remember those days. :D

I've played countless hours of both SP and MP, finished hundreds of SP titles and have more than 500 000 kills online in games like COD and I've seen a change in my gaming patterns over the last few years from preferring MP to playing only SP titles and now back again since my son has started playing with me.

I think in essence that we all go through a phase where we like the excitement of online MP, the fact that you are paying against real people and are facing opponents that make real decisions albeit bad ones on occasion, thanks again to Spartan and the rest of the guys from ATF for the multiple TK's :)

I loved MP and stopped playing SP titles because I was dedicating all of my time to the competitive MP side of things.
With the loss in gaming time due to gaining so much in real life to be thankful for though, I went back and re-experienced my SP roots from back in the days when online gaming was limited to 30 minutes online playing DOD over Dialup.

It saved gaming for me, I could once again play at my own pace and participate in the purest form of escapism I know of.
No pressure to perform, no consistently irritating guys with (Insert N00b weapon of Choice here) and most importantly more pure enjoyment.

Since then, with my son getting older we have started playing together and this has brought online MP back into my daily life, not playing competitively for the most part, aside from one or two crucible matches to fill the time just before bedtime but in a more relaxed casual environment.
We only play with people we know and we only play PvE for the most part now and I have to say that this is the perfect balance for me, I get the highlights of online gaming and also get to have the available time to experience SP titles for myself without the frustration that defines online gaming with random people that may or may not understand where the boundaries are between online gaming conduct and offline real life accountability
