It turns out the problem was related to a conflict between AVG and Adobe's Creative Cloud which kept killing my network connection - so what I thought was hardware related was not....problem solved.

So did you turf AVG or Creative Cloud?
Paid for or free version?Neither, had to add a registry setting and it was all sorted. For some reason the conflict started about 40 cscript processes which just killed my network card.
What was most worrying was AVG's reluctance to admit there was a problem.....one more issue with AVG and I'm binning it. This caused me to totally re-install Windows 10.

What if I told you that anti-virus software provides a false sense of security.

Yeah, I normally don't even run anti-virus software, normally just stick to Windows Defender, but that's only because it comes pre installed.
I do, but it's there to catch the obvious and really only checks removable media, temporary folders as well as downloads for anything obviously nasty. What I do recommend is Immunet
I'm convinced, will be cancelling my AVG sub shortly, thank you. What is your 'anti-virus' setup then?
