Sound card vs onboard.

So... Get another speaker system, then?

Thanks for your input.
Unless its really bad I wouldn't worry.

Also wouldn't replace the speakers based purely on my thumbsucked analysis...google it a bit & try different combinations of gear to identify the culprit.

e.g. I've had audio issue from a poor motherboard. Could also be the computers PSU, or dodgy wiring in the house etc

The humming noise goes away when the volume is turned about 1 quarter of the way around.

It worsened over time however.

I tried my onboard on my msi z97 gaming 5 with audio boost enabled and disabled and it doesn't come close to my sound blaster z but I must admit I'm rocking Sennheiser HD598's so yeah maybe on lower end headphones it will sound the same but I will still say get dedicated sound. I think for music and non hd movies onboard is ok but for gaming with virtual surround dedicated sound card is better

Awesome cans! Had the pleasure of using a pair for 2 weeks last December. Had to return them due to them being a gift for the wife, but she hated the open backed design. If I have R3k to spend on headphones I'll definitely get these again. The styling is a matter of personal taste, but I LOVE the look.

I use on-board sound but it goes through my TEAC amp and have had no problems with it at all.The only issue is Games do not output in DTS.

I also have the z5500 and used it with MSI z87 g45 mobo with realtek alc1150 HD audio onboard. I then installed an asus xonar d2x sound card and and must admit that the sound was an overall improvement, especially gaming. I can hear things clearer and louder on surround sound. For music the clarity has improved somewhat and the bass is much deeper. Overall an improvement but not chalk and cheese difference.

I am pretty terrible when it comes to motherboard knowledge, But i have also been thinking about a separate Sound Card, I'm just not sure how good my on board can be, I haven't been able to get my surround sound to work properly yet either, this is my motherboard:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4142#ov

Audio - "High quality 108dB SNR HD audio"

Anyone know how good the on board sound is ? Sorry for the Noobish questions, but never really been clued up on motherboard specs

For the GA-Z77M-D3H it uses a VIA VT2021

SNR is Signal-to-noise ratio
