Spending your Tax refund

Always do the tax return especially if you earn under the limit - if you have a medical aid you claim that and I always get that money back since I still earn under the tax bracket.1

Should be getting like 10k back this year (abnormally high due to partial tax year). :D Will probably use it next time I'm ZA side on holidays

How much must you earn to be taxed?
Primary rebate divided by the lowest marginal rate. That 70k mentioned early sounds about right didn't check it though

The prevailing theory is that they have done that so that they don't have to refund people.
No its purely to streamline the admin. If you've got literally nothing except salary then you'll pay exactly the right amount via IRP5/PAYE. Once there is additional income or deductions then you need to file a return (or if you're above that 350k threshold).

I was thinking VAT. Every time you buy something.
lols no - PAYE...pay as you earn.

I'm waiting for my R15,700 to be paid back. It's only this high because I didn't receive salary twice this tax year and only half salary 2 other months. Plus I have an RA and income protector fund, which also guarantees rebates each year.

Plus the medical aid if your employer doesn't pay for it. I did my tax return now and am pleasantly surprised.

Got R2640 back. Decided to do the right thing and pay it onto my credit card, although I'm very tempted to buy an Xbox One now that it wouldn't be such a chunk out of my pocket...

Are you guys basically saying that medical aid ends up semi free due to taxes? or just discounted...

You get a portion back. Mine is roughly 25% 15%

Edit: From SARS website
R257 per month for the taxpayer who paid the medical scheme contributions
R257 per month for the first dependant
R172 per month for each additional dependant(s)

Got 10k back from the tax man this year, decided to save and spend when needed not going all out buying equipment this time :). Weird still having money this time of month :/

Ye waiting this long is a little abnormal. I remember to took like a week max to refund the money.

I still need to submit mine, really need to sit down and do it. Flip this year is goin by so fast!

You might have been randomly picked for an audit. Happened to me last year. Have you logged in again since submitting? There will be a notice if you need to submit supporting documents.

I got that. Immediately after submitting my tax return. I don't have a scanner at home so I uploaded all my certificates but didn't upload any of the unclaimed doctor visit invoices or any of the pharmacy invoices. I really hope they don't want that. They don't really give you any information about what exactly they want.
