Steam is taking banning very serious

that makes zero sense ...... so we lose our rights when gaming then is that it. Ok kimo-sabe

When calling someone a douche for no reason than they don't play as well as you does not fall under freedom of speech. The way people speak online is not the same way people speak face to face. Half the shit said on-line wouldn't fly if said it in a real world environment. Also freedom of speech doesn't mean you are allowed to say what ever you want when you want. In general freedom of speech doesn't include libel, slander and obscenity.

And on top of it, Valve can actually say you not allowed to swear in game if they want. Its not taking your freedom away. What sort of person thinks insulting someone for no good reason is your right? that doesn't make sense.

I don't get this whole "freedom of speech" argument. They have policies in place to make it a slightly more pleasant experience for a majority of the users, I don't see why this is an issue.

Now imagine if people start spamming the channels with advertisements and product endorsements, claiming it's freedom of speech. Would that be okay too?

If you want to go around swearing at people and insulting them, do it with your own friends, who are probably cool with it. You don't go out in the real world and treat people like that, so I don't see why it should be okay to do it online. If you insist, you're just going to have to deal with the consequences.

This 100%, try treat people online the same way you would treat them face to face.

You have the freedom to swear all you want, but there's this little thing called etiquette :).

Heck, you are free to dress up like a lady gaga and talk like lil' wayne at your in-laws if you want.
No one will stop the way you dress or talk, but they probably won't let you in the next time :p

Spot those way too young too understand liberty and censorship ......

Try look at the point that's beyond the type of person in the topic and focus on precedents ;)

I wonder if this is the whole thing, lets say your always with your friends, calling them P, K's, C's and A's quiet often. Would one become num to the idea that its ok, to do it to tom dick and harry, even if you don't know them?

I just kinda believe everyone should instill good behaviour even with friends no matter what.

For me I get highly peeved if someone is raging and calling people the K word, it scares me actually, I know for a fact that I was not taught by anybody that its OK to be throwing that word around at all, but I have narrowed it down to A) either the parents say the same thing behind closed doors (thus making the child think its acceptable, even after they have turned 20 they still use it) or B) their friends actually laugh every time, when the word is used thus encouraging them to use it as a daily activity. It's almost like they believe because the dictionary means non believer it cant be offensive to another, but in real terms it actually hurts the person.

Personally I think the world is broken, people act and behave like animals, but soon as they become a victim they soon realise the pains that come with it, however never change their behaviour or whatever they say on a daily basis.

It seems like we are going philosophical here, so I'm going to spill some random personal philosophy here:

Debate is like flipping a coin with a bunch of people betting on heads or tails.
Well since it's only two choices, one has to win!
Most people don't realise that there are three sides to a coin, heads, tails, and the edge.
The edge is the equilibrium between the two sides, but why no one bets on the edge?

Well, simple, chances of the coin landing on the edge are pretty darn slim!
No one knows what the balancing truth is because we are not given that option during the debate. It is something left to be discovered.
Why go through all the trouble to discover a balance when I have my truth that thousands of people supporting my view?
But having so many people under a single believe surely can't be right. They must be oppressed or are victims of propaganda!

Next thing you know: "Oh look, an argument has broke out"

Back on topic, the following article makes some interesting points:

Bottom-line: human behaviour is interesting :D

Steam,nanny edition.

I've grown a thick enough skin not to be bothered by most things other people say in games and on some forum.Doesn't mean i don't get annoyed though.(I've thrown some insults around myself when pissed.M16A3 noob, low lives on crane, etc)

I'm all for people showing respect to each other in-game, but I must also remind people that there is a mute button.

Continued hate speech towards someone is not on and should be reported, but if someone is raging because he's getting owned, then why can't he swear?

I've been in many lobbies where people swear like sailors but I push the mute button and viola, problem solved. In other lobbies where people are raging I decide to tease them as they make it so easy and get them raging even more, so much so that they quite or just shut up. It's all part of online gaming.

I remember this one time I was just pissed off, had a really crap day and was playing the Uncharted 2 beta all those years ago. There was this Brit in the lobby and I decided to take the piss out of him, he didn't rage, cry or quite but responded to my words in a very witty manner. I couldn't help but just laugh, he was just taking it all and giving it back, I was very impressed. We've been friends ever since, hell I'm going to the UK very soon and we're gonna knock a few pints.

If someone won't leave you alone, report him. Otherwise just mute or get over it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if someone starts swearing and raging because they're losing. I would however mind if they try to take it out on me, that's not right in my opinion.

Not being able to use steam functionality. Ie. Chat with friends, play with friends, play certain games, greenlight voting, etc.
