Strategy game suggestions

So out of the blue, I have a curious itch to try out a strategy game. So what would you guys suggest for a beginner?

My genres are pretty much everything except RPGs.

I have a Core 2 Duo laptop (feel free to donate anything) "whistling: :o, and a PS3

Preference (feel free to deviate from my list - this is just to help things down):
-Decent story/characters/personality
-Modern
-No aliens/marines
-Either RTS or TB is fine
-Doesn't take an eternity to finish/has an actual end
-No fantasy
-Existence of females
-Superpowers are lovely

The only encounter I've had with a strategy is a Warhammer demo on PSP which I surprisingly enjoyed (that was 5 years ago)

Like I said feel free to deviate or even ignore my list, I just want to know if a game that's along my preferences exists becuase it doesn't seem like it. I'm aware of the popular franchises i.e. Starcraft, XCOM, Civilisation, also googled top ten lists - I want a personal opinion, experience etc. I guess I'm willing to try out anything- just sell me on it.

Oh, and I need more puzzle games, too.

Ok no aliens why?

Modern rts games are hardcore on the cpu you so not a lot of modern rts games.

My Fav rts game at the moment is Supreme commander Forged alliance forever but its really a mp game.
Huge battles with gaint experimental weapons. Naval, air, land units.

I would say command and conquer tiberian wars but you don't want aliens.

Company of heroes is an awesome game based on ww 2.

One of the best rts games out there is Dawn of war, its old but still a blast.

Modern as in the game is made recently or the game should be set in modern times?

Here's some RTS that a C2D should handle:

Frozen Synapse (http://store.steampowered.com/app/98200/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1)
Personal favourite, it can also be played on a tablet. Top down plan-and-go system. Plan your move, review them, then press the execute button. The action takes place simultaneously. You either watch helplessly as your team gets annihilated or light a cigar going "I love it when a plan comes together". Complete with single story and multiplayer.

Age of Empire 2 HD (http://store.steampowered.com/app/221380/)
Because one cannot mention a RTS game without mentioning Age of Empires.

Medieval 2: Total War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/4700/)
Choose a faction and follow their progress to conquer Europe in grand strategy. Watch as thousands on soldier clash in RTS mode, with pause options. Not really modern, and can take quite long to finish, but it is so sweet to see your outnumbered army beat the odds 300 style!

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition (http://store.steampowered.com/app/266840/)
It's a classic, plus you can call on the power of Gods. How's that for super power, eh? :D

Jagged alliance Back in Action (http://store.steampowered.com/app/57740/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1)
Hire mercenaries to liberate Alruco. Combat takes place in Play-and-go setting with the ability to pause. Story is kinda meh, but the action really stood out for me.

Most of the other RTS involves heavy army or RPG elements if a decent story is involved.
Personally, I loved XCOM enemy unknown and enemy within. The feeling of losing a general whom you raised from a rookie in classic iron man mode can be quite emotional.

Like I said, you can scrap the list - I was just craving something along those lines at the moment. I don't mind the any of the stuff I excluded. If it's making things difficult, forget I mentioned it - just consider my hardware and that I'm new to the genre (but a story is a definite bonus for now).

I'm already playing the original Deus Ex, so graphics don't really concern - as long as the game can run (even if it's ultra low).

@Chan Modern times

Red Alert / Command and Conquer Franchise? They have a decent story and will run alright on your PC.

Age of Empires, they have the complete edition for 3 which is a nice buy. I'm just bought it for my current PC, worth it IMO.

Those are some of my faves too, and not to mention the originals are freeware nowadays so well worth a try for the price. I would recommend Tiberian Sun any day.

Try OpenRA if you have trouble getting the original games to run.

Age of Empires 2 HD has been mentioned and is a worthy RTS to try. It is an all time classic imo.

Other RTS suggestions would be Starcraft 2 (start with Wings of Liberty as it is the first in the trilogy and that is where the mission based story begins). If you enjoy this, head onto SC2: Heart of the Swarm.

If TB, then Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is an absolute winner. The number of days I have enjoyed in Civ 4 are too many to mention, but needless to say this comfortably falls into my personal top 3 for strategy games.

Another thumbs up for Age of Empires! Brilliant series to play and would run maxed on your system. You could even try the spin-off Age of Mythology series as well.

Age of Empires, Command and Conquer and Starcraft are the cornerstone of RTS in my opinion. Would be a great place to start. If graphics are not a problem for you then go back to the originals and work your way through?

Age of Empires campaign will give you nice gameplay set in a historical context. C&C and Starcraft will give you interesting stories and good solid gameplay.

Special Mention: the Total War series as previously mentioned. (But I'd recommend tackling one of the above mentioned as these are more complex)

Thanks, guys! The general consensus seems to be C&C for now I'll definitely check out the other suggestions, too. The chronology seems confusing. Where should I start?

:wtf: do you have two accounts or did someone do some epic copy+paste work?

....
I would suggest starting with the Red Alert , then the original C&C. The two's storyline is interwoven.
Generals is the standalone from the series.

Ooooo I forgot, Pokemon TCG online. It's free and a great mix of strategy and luck. Plus I'm looking for victims to face my Keldeo/ Plasma Kyrum deck

SupCom Gold is a good deal for anyone that likes games similar to Rome:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11732/

Loved that game - esp FA. It does tend towards hardcore though & the replay value is limited as the AI is fairly reactive. Still - a bit more sophisticated than most RTS.

There is a SupCom2 as well...didn't really like that one.

Hey Kidd, you mentioned that you're into TBS as well as RTS? You should grab Jagged Alliance 2: Gold while it's on sale on Steam right now. Well worth it. JA 2 is about the best TBS title I've ever played. There are plenty of mods like 1.13 which make it even better.

Otherwise, there's a free game that's very much like XCOM, called UFO: Alien Invasion. That's also pretty good.
