Telkom ISP issue, anyone else having same experience?

Hi

So was wondering if anyone else have been experiencing latency issues using Telkom ISP when playing games like Dota2 or CSGO in the Cape Town area. I've been having constant 600-800 ping when trying to play games, however when i switch to a Afrihost or Mweb account, i don't have any problems at all.

This is only affecting my gaming experience, browsing, download and youtube streaming is fine... just bloody games that's high in latency.

I'm close to cancelling with them and going back to Mweb or give Afrihost a go.

Cheers

Yup, I get high pings on the Dota 2 servers with Telkom. I don't really play any other games online that often to be able to tell, but there's something wrong with Telkom on gaming servers. I use MWEB.

Ping/ latency was fine throughout the weekend. I played some Hon, Neverwinter and Gotham city imposters.

I know alot of guys are complaining about LOL pings on TI on myBB.

Its definitely not my line... they are either shaping or there's some sort of limits in place, i've done a trace route to a Dota and CSGO server and my responses is fine, but let me join a game... 600-800ms ping, also not something on my PC.

yep, just saw the thread this morning after I posted here... seems like there are several people complaining.

Yip dude, definitely something to do with traffic shaping. My line's also fine as I get normal latency to any local game servers, except when I'm using my Trilkom account.

Its fine for hours on 200 ms then suddenly jumps to 600 ms - 1000 ms for a while then slowly drops again so have to use my Afrihost account when using WoW.

I was gathering some ingame screenshots last night for Telkom Techie so that they can investigate the issue. My Telkom account had a ping of 600 and up, that was about 17:30-18:00 when took the screenshots. Then i tried my Afrihost account and that had a ping of 400 +- but then when I switched to my Mweb account my ping were nothing higher than 80 within Dota.

At least they now have trace routes and screenshots to work with, hope they can get this resolved.

Please share if they do though. I'm sure there's thousands of peeps waiting to see what's causing this. Everybody has this problem with Dota and noone's been able to figure it out.

I suspect its either a DNS problem or fault somewhere with the cabling.

Have you tried google dns?

It's not a DNS issue. DNS does not go beyond querying hostnames for websites or nodes on local networks. This particular issue has something to do with traffic shaping/routing.

Took these yesterday

Seems to be a telkom problem, played CS:GO earlier and many people had 300ms300 ms+ pings, seems like it started when the line upgrades had occurred.

Happened last year as well, took them half a year to fix it for me. Sigh, some protocols were actually running better when I was still on 1mbit. I like the added speed of 2mbit, but my line drops way too often or desync's completely, prompting me to reset the router. It's getting annoying.

My international ping on some sites is crazy, just browsing is becoming difficult.

Yeah me and my buddy were trying to watch the AGDQ2014 speed runs this whole and it has been very much kaka.
On a 10mbps line you cant even stream 144p... WTF!?
The only times it was fine was early in the morning, like 7-8ish.

We thought it was Telkom shaping Twitch... until he played a game of LoL and got >600ms constantly

I have the exact same problem. I don't play LoL. but with Twitch, bloody hell it's impossible. I have a 2mbit line, and a couple weeks ago it was perfect, the stream was great with little to no lag. Now I try and view guys that I watched in the past, and it doesn't even load. Very disappointing, even Youtube has been giving problems lately.

EDIT: These are my current speedtest results. In case the link goes down, to a local Cape Town server I'm getting: 656 ms ping, 0.14Mb/s down and 0.26 Mb/s up, on a 2mbit line. This is horrible.
