Telkom LTE

Flex

Will lift for boobs!
Hi every1

I need some help and advice.
I moved into a new house last week. The internet the complex provides is horrible. Very unpredictable and unstable!!

I want to get Telkom LTE now, but in the coverage map I am about 1m out of the covered area. I am trying to get technician to come test signal... but Telkom.....

Anyone here have any experience or reviews on this service?

I use Telkom LTE for all my Internet needs and I've never had a problem. It's the most stable, fastest Internet I've used with latency that is comparable to ADSL. The only downside are the small cap sizes. I live right in the middle of a well-covered area though, so I don't know how well it works if you are outside of the recommended areas. Overall, I can say that I am extremely happy with it, if you have sufficient reception, it works better than ADSL.

Thanks for the feedback! Going to a Telkom shop either today or tomorrow to inquire some more

A word of warning: though I have plenty of good things to say about the performance of Telkom's LTE product, my opinion towards their stores is on the opposite side of the emotional spectrum. I once sat in a Telkom store for 1.5 hours. I recommend trying to get as much done over the phone as possible.

Was just on the phone, as well as their online chat. Spent 20 min holding on the phone to get a technician on the phone. Was not successful. So going to a shop is my next option, I live down the street to a mall so should not be too much of a problem! I hope!

Simple, DO NOT. Telkom will gladly sell you the package, then if the signal is dodgy they will tell you that you're outside of the coverage area...tough luck. Rather opt for ANY OTHER method to connect to the internet.

I am gatvol of small wireless service providers with small amounts of staff not being able to handle inquiries and support. Telkom is not the best by any means at all. Their new LTE package is well priced though. So would like to see what the signal strength is like. Putting ADSL into a complex is just such a hassle, otherwise I would've done that

Well, you'll be gatvol of a large mobile provider with small amounts of staff that are technically incapable of handling inquiries and support. I've had to deal with Telkom 3G/LTE for over 5 years when I was living in Gauteng and I can tell you that 3G speed for them means about 3 mbps and LTE speed is "acceptable" if it is over 10 mbps.

Issues I have had with Telkom/8ta 3G/LTE :

- When it rains the signal degrades to absolute shit, and IF you eventually get the technician to come out and do a signal test they will tell you that it's condensation/water/some other water based lie or excuse at the tower
- If the wind blows in a certain way your signal goes to shit
- If there are trees anywhere in the cell area they'll use that as an excuse for poor signal
- If there are buildings in the cell area they'll use that as an excuse for poor signal
- If there are power lines in the are they'll use that as an excuse for poor signal
- If the tower gets struck by lightning they can take up to a month to repair it
- If you're even SLIGHTLY outside of the coverage area map they won't even attempt to assist you
- They will admit that even though you are inside the coverage map you are still not guaranteed service as the coverage map is only an indication of coverage and cannot be used to determine if you will actually have signal

True yes. at least all of the the problems you mentioned above are obvious issues that you can expect with Telkom as well as 3G/LTE services. So it should not be any surprise when one of those problems do arise

Funny thing is that my Vodacom and MTN 3G/LTE never gave the slightest issue

Mmm Really? Do you have the LTE router and everything or just a stick? And how do their rates compare?

I had about 3 different 3G and LTE devices... All Huawei, from the Huawei B593 (LTE Router), E3531 (WiFi thing) and the E5330 (stick)

Vodacom is horribly expensive and MTN's uncapped was not too bad, but the throttling policy drove my insane

I've personally never had issues like this with Telkom and two of my colleagues will tell you the same. In fact, one of them is just outside the coverage area.

You are totally right that once you have signed up and if it doesn't work then you may not cancel, but that's why they will send out a technician to test the signal if it is questionable.

And the rain problems... eh? I've never ever had an issue with any kind of weather and I live on a hillside where it pisses with rain and the wind blows 3 days out of 4. I'm not sure why you had that experience. It's possible that I don't have these problems considering my proximity and LoS to the tower, so I would recommend that Flex gets a techie out before signing anything.

R579 / month x24 10GB data + 10GB night owl data

MTN its best to go to a store and speak to a sales drone as their site is as clear as mud.

Ouch.

You can get 50Gig anytime data and 50Gig night-owl data from Telkom for R699 a month provided you can connect to their network i.e. no roaming on other networks is possible.

Jup that is definitely the plan! Vodacom and MTN does not have the kind of packages that Telkom has for their LTE. So heading over to Telko9m first thing Morrow morning and getting someone to come check signal. If it is acceptable and stable then I will get the Uncapped package from Telkom. Will keep you guys up to date. With the Good, bad and the Ugly!

Guess it depends on the tower then. The towers in and around Edenvale are fubar though, which is where I had all my issues.
