I wouldn't say he is useless.... Don't go to the other end of the scale and imply meanings to fit your goal. I said nowhere he is useless.
More people would notice if he was useless, and then they would say something.
I am saying there are better players, and captains, than him.
The team wins games, not the captain. His record would not be good at all if the players in the team sucked. So, he was fortunate to have very good players in his teams through his captaincy.
The way I see it... He does enough to get by unnoticed, the rest of the forwards can carry him through this... it's one of the benefits playing in a team game, especially where you can be carried / assisted by 7 others, which is not easily spotted in scrums, mauls, etc.
With the backline something like this is much easier to spot.
