The Elder Scrolls Online Beta

Did my first dungeon early this morning. Healing is just WEIRD. People take TONS of damage and you have to spam your heals. Tank takes a hit and loses half or third of HP, you hit your heal which is not targeted, it just picks the lowest HP group member and heals them, BAM, almost half your magicka is gone.

Heals are mostly 1 point of resource for 1 HP.

Want to cast a heal that has a 2 second cast time? Forget it, people will be dead before you are done. It is very strange, will take some getting used to for a fan of being a healer in MMOs like me.

I think it should be interesting. I had a discussion with a buddy of mine who's only played a handful of MMOs but is a big fan of Elder Scrolls and he wants to play it in first person with as little info on the screen as possible. Now that's fine, but it makes instancing a bit unfair to the more MMO orientated player. Since I assume most ES fans will build weird spec'd class. Some successful, some not, but they've never had to take other peoples playstyles into account. I foresee a clash of interests there.

Apparently the dungeons(the instanced ones at least) are the most difficult part of the game at the moment. looking forward to getting in on Friday since my ISP has just about fixed my line issue. No point in trying to down 22 gigs in 2 days.

Another 2 warnings about dungeons:

Chests, run to get them first, because, in their infinite cocked up wisdom, the designers made it so that only the person who opens the chest gets the loot. Yes, you must be greedy to succeed.

If you get into a dungeon after the initial event has started, don't bother if you want xp, leave. If you dont get the initial event, you get 0 xp for the whole dungeon, mob xp is almost 0 as it is so you get nothing from that either.

So has this become worth playing?

I joined a beta weekends and meh.

So far, if you are looking for an MMO, no, don't play. If you are looking for a nice SP adventure for which you have to pay a sub for at the end of the first month, then sure.

Wow that is shockingly poor design on chests there.

Interestingly enough, when you finish the first dungeon then suddenly the other 2 dungeons in your level range become available and you can port to them, they are in other faction lands.

This is pretty good, would love to see if you can cross faction group for those.

I am told, that at lvl 50 the low[er] (all?) level areas of the 2 other factions becomes scaled lvl 50+ areas . So technically you probably don't want to go quest in those lands below lvl 50 unless you like repeating content (not sure if one can even travel to the other faction lands). Apparently there is also a sequence as to how the other 2 factions open up for you at lvl 50, so you don't just get to go to both at the same time.

So not sure how the dungeons of other factions opening up features in all this though.

This also implies, it's probably not as good an idea to play many alts and try to experience the other factions' areas, because chances are you will have to play it all again at the level cap .

Anyway that's just what i've read, it is quite an ingenious way of extending and re-using content. I mean it would be quite absurd how there's 3 factions each having their own lvl 1-50 zones and then not using 2/3 of it on a single character.

50 isn't cap though right, there are 10 veteran levels?

Well yea, but as far as i know at lvl 50 is when you most likely reach the final zone in your faction and complete the story. I believe from then everything becomes scaled according to veteran levels. i.e. your "home" faction would scale to lvl 50 , the next faction lvl 50+ [veteran lvl 1] and the 3rd faction lvl 50++ [veteran lvl 2] ...or something like that....or even higher.

Kinda like Diablo 3 i suppose with the different "difficulty modes" , in this case it's "veteran levels".

Again, that's just what i picked up on random forum chatter about people wondering how factions will work at the end game and whether you technically become able to transition between factions etc. So i'm not quite 100% how this all works, but it does sounds like a good idea to instantly turn ALL the zones into zones you will revisit at the level cap. Unlike say, WoW, where you are never going to go back to the low level zones.

Too early to judge. Its quite nice as co-op which is the way I have been playing with a friend. Crafting is good as well. Will have to see about larger group play when we get there.

It won't be replacing swtor for me but its a quite nice secondary one.

Apparently the US servers went through hell yesterday. Massive lag, rubber banding etc. Worst and strangest thing was that there were instances where people DC'd and when they logged back in they were on someone else's account. The US servers went for about 12 hours yesterday and when they came back up they started turning things like guilds and mail back on. While all the really weird stuff seems to have stopped the performance is reportedly still poor. Hoping that Friday when more players join it'll still be good.

Been so long since I've played an MMO I forgot about launch week woes.

They seem to have a real big problem with degrading or corruption going on as time goes on and more and more players interact with things. It was the thing in beta too, if you were online early right after servers went active, things are perfect, however as time goes on, quests starts to bug out more and more , phasing bugging out and you can actually feel it increases and it's not necessarily that the quests were bugged by default.

I kinda got the feeling they have to reboot their servers regularly to clear all these issues, so not sure what weird coding they've been doing.

Can someone confirm this for me please, I don't think I will be able to today: if you run a dungeon again, after having completed it already, do you get a skill point for it?

I was doing back to back dungeons last night and I had a slot of skill points suddenly, I don't know if it was because I levelled or what.

Yes you do:

http://tamrieljournal.com/skill-points-in-eso/

Another part of natural progression is doing quests. Many quests in ESO reward you with skill points. Typically these are culmination points in the quest line. For each zone you get roughly 3 skill points just by completing longer quest lines. The main story line in ESO gives roughly 10 skill points.

Every group dungeon also has their own quest – you gain a skill point for completing every 4-man dungeon quest.

[Skillpoints]
Skyshards 107
Levels 58
Alliance War Ranks 49
Zone Quest Lines 48
Group Dungeon Quests 16
Public Dungeons 16
Main Story Quests ~10
Total ~304

I see, that is only if you do the dungeon quest though, which you can only do once. You do not get a skillpoint for doing it again after the first time.

Good to know, I thought I was getting a skillpoint for just doing the dungeon without the quest, which I wasn't.

Damn, I was hoping for a good reason to do the dungeons, I enjoy them but there is no progression in any way after the first time. Lame design.

Oh well, soldiering on.

You seem to really be disliking the game Shrike. I can't comment myself since I haven't actually played it yet, but you seem so annoyed with it.

Well what kind of progression after the first time would you expect though? What does other MMOs do here that makes it less lame? I would think it rather poor design if you could just rank up skillpoints indefinitely for repeating the dungeons over and over?

Basically good XP for doing a dungeon, the SP would be overkill I agree so dont want that, just something to show for the pain of trying to learn to heal and dealing with PUGs.

I wouldnt say dislike as much as annoyed yes. The game is just missing many modern standard MMO features which is irritating me. I am still playing it, a lot though. I am enjoying the single player experience.

Guys we still looking for more members to join Grim Wolves :) we would like to get our bank activated.
