Sometimes a person is blessed with good friends, and mine is treating me to a round of golf at Irene Golf Club tomorrow morning. Last time I played there, I may have broken a driver, but that bastard never caused a fade again...![]()
All credit to Henrik Stenson. A wire-to-wire win for the biggest prize money in golf – R110 million. Thats $ 10 million in bonus money for winning the FedExCup and $ 1.44 million for winning the TOUR Championship. Just think about that for a second… When he comes to South Africa to play in the SA Open and probably the Nedbank Golf Challenge he could use that money on a scouting trip to buy a small country in Africa.
Back to golf. He’s hit the most greens in regulation over the four FedEx Cup events. He’s won two of the four events. He’s the hottest golfer in the World and has been since the Open Championship. I say well-done Henrik – you’re a great champion.
Tiger Woods may not have had the best tournament but he still finished second on the Standings. He’s also got the points required to win the PGA of America's Player of the Year, and he’s won the PGA TOUR Money Title and the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average.
How about Jordan Spieth. He’s the same age as Brandon Stone and in his first year he’s overlapped both Lee Trevino and Johnny Miller on the All-Time Money lists. Crazy isn’t it? Jordan certainly looks like a future world-beater. He has it all!
He started the year without status on any professional tour but then won the John Deer Classic and secured a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. He finished seventh in the FedEx Cup standings and for that alone he won a bonus of $700,000 - not bad for your rookie year!
Oh wow. Enjoy the time out on the course, Sir. Hope it clears up the cobwebs and produces awesome pars and birdies
Is it an 18 or 9 hole course? Never played it, so excuse my ignorance.
It's a full 18 hole course, in the heart of snobsville Pretoria...
I kid of course. It's still the course I've hit the biggest drive of my life. Hole 3 is a shortish par 4 with a dogleg left at around 220m. If you reach the dogleg you have an easy 140m or so to go straight to the green. That day I didn't have a hybrid in my bag, so I went for the turn with the driver. Luckily it caught the dogleg as it goes down the hill, and the ball stopped at the end about 20m or so from the green on the right. We measured it to be close to about 350m drive, albeit with only a 260m or so carry...but still, I felt like The Hulk!!
Golf Magazine has just released its Top 100 Golf Courses of the World. The top three are all American, with Pine Valley at Number 1; Cypress Point at Number 2 and Augusta National at Number 3. Only Durban Country Club got into the Top 100 and then literally, at Number 100!
Obviously all rankings are just a matter of opinion, but I have actually played more than half of the courses in the Top 100 and I would definitely add three more South African courses to that list. For me, Leopard Creek, Gary Player Country Club and Arabella actually rank ahead or alongside courses like Rye, Royal Adelaide and Swinley Forest. Also interesting is that Gary Player has designed over 300 golf courses and not one of them is in the Top 100. Between 1890 and 1940, 58 of the Top 100 courses were built. Since 1940 only 32
