The demo was rendered internally at 3K resolution (around 3200 x 2000 pixels), which was downscaled to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Thats GFX ram...no good for VMs. 12 gigs of (non-gfx) ram isn't that expensive though...like 400 bucks or something.

Why do PC's need so much ram for games?

They prob took that choice because they wanted 2x gfx processing power. The 2x ram was just a side-effect. Pretty sure you could pull off identical results with 3-4 gigs.

To be honest I don't know whether its possible to buy GDDR & use it as normal ram. I suppose its *theoretically* possible...so no need for corners just yet...
