The psychology of 100 grams while losing weight

What's in 100 grams? It's less than the weight of the phone that I'm using to post this (iPhone 5S = 112g). An yet such a small measure can have a weirdly profound impact on the human psyche.

Take the 100 grams that make the difference between me weighing 100,0kg and 99,9kg for instance. How can the realisation that I had this morning on my bathroom scale have made me feel so self-satisfied and brought a huge smile to my face? After all, it is just 100g. Just 100 out of 100 000. A minuscule percentage (0,001% I think).

I've been carrying a fair bit of excess weight around with me for many years now. That "middle-aged spread" thing is real youngsters, be warned! Since December last year I've been making a concerted effort to change my poor eating habits, and to start exercising with a lot more regularity and focus than before. In the seven weeks that I've been tracking my weight I've managed to drop 3,3kg. Not a huge amount when you consider that I'm aiming to lose 25-30kg in total, but I've been satisfied with my progress.

This mornings' weigh-in was the first time that my weight went into double digits for at least a decade. For the past 10 years, every time that I've stood on a scale my number has been 100kg+. This morning it was 99,9kg. And I was ecstatic.

I've spent the day since then more mentally positive than I've been so far this year, and I'm hugely motivated now to focus on getting rid of that ,9 bit as quickly as possible as well.

But again, the real question I've been wondering about is how such a small swing in weight between 100 and 99,9 could spark such a big swing in mindset?

Water weight can vary but 1 or 2kg a day, so I take weekly averages. I'd be happy with 100g difference since I've put on a couple kg's over the holidays, but I'm still getting rid of all the junk food my parents brought over... I was down to 82kg but am back up to 84 now. I'm dreading seeing 85, which is kinda inevitable unless I toss all the overseas chocolate they brought me. I have self control in the grocery store, but if its in my house, I'm boned...

Still, grats on the loss you've made so far. Keep it up!

Yeah, I realise my joy is probably short-lived and the number will fluctuate up again. It was just that moment of joy when the numbers ticked down below 100 that thrilled me so.

Sugar is my number 1 enemy, and cutting as much of it out of my diet has been/is being the tough thing for me.

Thanks for the support!

Ya, I had that double digit ecstatic reaction back in June. Its a good feeling. Just keep at it as best you can, and don't beat yourself up if you do go back over. Just keep on truckin'

100kg = .1 of a ton.......that always scares me. Good luck with the diet! I've managed to lose 6kg as a result of taking up mountain bike riding and Herbalife since Oct last year.

Congrats!

Dreading the next couple months in this regard...company buys take-aways since we're working late. There is no way 2 months of fast food end well for me...:(

Its mostly a question of willpower though. Lost ~ 7kgs during Nov/Dec pretty easily by restricting calories significantly & jogging a (little) bit. Interestingly I noticed a very sharp drop in appetite went with this which made it easier to restrict things - kinda self-reinforcing.

Yeah my habit of downing a litre of water occasionally has not helped consistency. Mornings right after taking a leak seems best.

Much better to be hydrated than a little bit of consistency on the scale. I try to get 3-4 liters a day in.

Your mind set controls your weight in my opinion, if you keep saying i cant get past this point it will become very difficult for you to do it because of that mental block

Congrats man! It really does have a positive influence on your mind set, and if you keep a strong mind set it will keep you motivated to carry on, you wont want to have a "cheat" day, you will prefer not to have that extra sugar in your coffee or that chocolate you've been thinking of.

Iv been trying to cut it all out in the last 2 weeks and its going pretty well, that as well as going to the gym most mornings give you so much more energy during the day, I feel like I'm doing a better job at work as well, I'm not putting things off till the last minute and just getting things done.

Your mindset is a huge part of it, so keep staying positive and you will see way more 100g's fall off that scale

Well done!

This is true, sort of. It is more of a direct influence than controlling the weight. I had am image of me making my flab do waves with the power of my mind.

Congrats dude!

I have to be honest I hate getting on a scale at the moment, because I can see my weight coming down. Aka my my clothes are to big, I had to buy a lot of new stuff just because all my old stuff is getting to big, but the scale shows that I have gotten to a point where the weight is just not going down. I started swimming 2 weeks ago and started with 10 laps a day I am now on 22, I eat a lot healthier and I am happy with the results - you can even ask DieGrootHammer the huge difference it is already since he has met me. I have decided to stop getting on the scale and just revel in the fact that I am loosing the weight.

You can drink the water right after you measure. ;)

My point is early morning is the only time where you won't have drunk/eaten anything for like 8 hours. Any other time will be more variable.

Ya, we're saying the same thing in different ways... My point was you can go a day without drinking water, weigh less in the morning, drink 4 litres that day, then be up a kilo or two the next morning again. But ya, after the morning leak is the most consistent measurement you can take.

Thought id post- cutting sugar and drinking water, i lost 2 kgs in two weeks... minimal exercise

Grats! Keep it up :)
