What's in 100 grams? It's less than the weight of the phone that I'm using to post this (iPhone 5S = 112g). An yet such a small measure can have a weirdly profound impact on the human psyche.
Take the 100 grams that make the difference between me weighing 100,0kg and 99,9kg for instance. How can the realisation that I had this morning on my bathroom scale have made me feel so self-satisfied and brought a huge smile to my face? After all, it is just 100g. Just 100 out of 100 000. A minuscule percentage (0,001% I think).
I've been carrying a fair bit of excess weight around with me for many years now. That "middle-aged spread" thing is real youngsters, be warned! Since December last year I've been making a concerted effort to change my poor eating habits, and to start exercising with a lot more regularity and focus than before. In the seven weeks that I've been tracking my weight I've managed to drop 3,3kg. Not a huge amount when you consider that I'm aiming to lose 25-30kg in total, but I've been satisfied with my progress.
This mornings' weigh-in was the first time that my weight went into double digits for at least a decade. For the past 10 years, every time that I've stood on a scale my number has been 100kg+. This morning it was 99,9kg. And I was ecstatic.
I've spent the day since then more mentally positive than I've been so far this year, and I'm hugely motivated now to focus on getting rid of that ,9 bit as quickly as possible as well.
But again, the real question I've been wondering about is how such a small swing in weight between 100 and 99,9 could spark such a big swing in mindset?
