The Skyrim Mod/Tweaks/Tips Thread

Anyone tried that better performance mod? For some reason I'm getting crappy performance. The game defaults to high setting, but I'm getting about 30fps average and sometimes it dips below 20fps. I thought I should be able to cruise @ 60fps average @ high setting. My system: Amd 1055t @ 3.5GHZ, 5850, 8GB Ram.

Try puttings shadows to low. I manage everything else pretty high but shadows really killed my laptop.

The better performance mod seems to set my graphics adapter to a 8800 GS, while I've got an Ati 6870 HD. No idea why, as I made sure to download the ati mod.

That's what the mod does, from what I've read. It tricks the game into thinking you have an 8800GS which, for some reason, is the best card for the Gamebryo engine.

I looked at that better performance mod, and after reading the description of what it does, I steered clear. Tweaking *.ini files helps as does turning down shadows a notch, as previously mentioned. Also make sure to get the large address register fix thing, so that the game can use more than the default 2GB of RAM (also, make sure you have more than 3GB of RAM before you use it :P).

I'm running everything on max with some high res skin packs, and after setting AA to 4x and lowering shadows 1 notch down from the highest setting (I forget if it was Ultra of High) my frame rate shot up dramatically.

Is anyone else experiencing terrible frame drops when doing a quick load? It's so bad that i have to restart the game each time... highly annoying.

I've been using the performance fix for about 2 days now. Playing about 10 hours a day so I think that's a decent test. I have a 4670 graphics card so it's quite old. And while my original settings were on high, they are now almost everything on their highest. With the exception of Shadows being on high. The performance patch helped my computer out a lot. I haven't tried it with the large memory application yet. I'd love to use all my 6GB of memory.

Haha! I had that problem as well, until I realized my FRAPS video recording hotkey was set to F9 (Default). James if you are using FRAPS, that the problem.

That must be the exact problem! Thanks for pointing that one out :D

I've also experienced lackluster performance on my card. Thought frames would be higher than they are... haven't dpne reg fic that James mentioned though, will report back later if it helps me to dis/encourage its use.

Also, will be installing this and will report what I find:

I can't even notice any difference with these mods installed, maybe my eye is just untrained. Sorry if you were waiting for me to endorse it I can't. You will need to try it for yourself.

Also, the large address register fix has dramatically improved performance on my rig.

Let me know if there is a mod to skip the whole first part untill where you can decide with what guy you want to excape with.

You get to choose who to escape with? I always went with the Stormcloak guy. I know there's a "mod" (it's actually a savegame) that starts you off at character creation. Not much to do after that.

Did you press "pause" or "break" on your keyboard in-game?

Oh. thanks. I did that and the difference is obvious now. I personally don't like the effect though. It brightens everything and washes out the colours a bit. If I wanted to be able to see in the dark I would've been a Kaajit.
