That they are exactly what they are called, Unidentified Flying Objects. All alien ship sightings are either regular airplanes at odd angles, new and secret military planes, or cloud formations. An F22 raptor from straight ahead looks like a flying saucer and F117 night hawks have been mistaken for them. And in the 50s both Russia and the US have been experimenting with saucer-shaped airplanes.

Even the term "flying saucer" is a misinterpretation. It comes a guy who saw some wierd looking aircraft over alaska in the late 40s and he described the way they moved as "saucers skipping over a lake" but they were shaped more like mantas. And in the 40's the US were experimenting with manta-shaped jet-bombers.
