Thief reviews rolling in...you may want to cancel that pre-order

:sad panda:
Was looking to a good stealth game. Oh well, will wait for bundle price :p

On matters of reboot, it seems like Tomb Raider was the only good reboot thus far

Tomb Raider was more than just "good", it was actually FANTASTIC!

I can't understand why certain Publishers can't get a dynamic standard in quality. Thinking they gave us Human Revolution, this is indeed an unexpected flop.

Perhaps they spent all of their creative prowess on that and had nothing left in the tank? :p

First they fucked up Hitman, now they're fucking up Thief. Square Enix, have you no shame?

Although when you consider the horrible development history of the Thief game and the fact that 6 months ago the game was still a complete mess, it's no surprise that they pushed out such a turd.

That's only on opinion. I loved Hitman Absolution, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Also, Thief is getting a lot of varying reviews so you can hardly call it a failure. Just because some people think it is a shit game doesn't make it so. Play the game first and then you can call it shit, but it will still be only an opinion.

You're part of a minority, though. A lot of people felt Absolution was a massive misstep from the franchise. IO-Interactive have already confirmed that the next Hitman game will draw inspiration from the older games and that they're removing a lot of things that were introduced in Absolution, like small, linear levels and checkpoints, so they know what they did wrong with Absolution.

The people who enjoyed Absolution are mostly from the camp of people who never played (or finished) the previous games, and I suspect we'll see the same thing happening with the new Thief game.

So I have to buy, then play the game myself, before I can call it shit? Despite a lot of reviews calling it shit and it looking like complete shit on streams? Sorry, but no. That's flaky logic. I don't have to dip my finger in shit to know it's shit. I've been playing games long enough that I can spot shit from a distance.

I played and finished all the games in the Hitman series multiple times before Absolution came out and I've finished Absolution more than once as well (think Ive played about 50 hours so far) and I still play a level or two from time to time. I will agree that it's not as good as some of the other games in the series but it is still an awesome Hitman.

IMO if you haven't played a game, read a book, watched a movie, etc. then your opinion on said game etc. means pretty much nothing. That's just me though.

trouble is, with limited budget and time available for gaming, we are forced to pick and choose. in this case, given the choice between buying Thief vs buying Dark Souls 2, the reviews make it very clear whats the right answer :)

but if this goes on steam sale in June then i shall probably grab it. just not now and not at full price.

Dark Souls 2 is ALWAYS the right answer. :p

I don't mean people have to pay full price for the game and finish it before their opinion has worth, but one has to at least try it for themselves before I will consider their opinion as having any value.

Take the Rambo game for example. It looks shit and everybody says it's shit so I decided to see for myself. It's actually not all that bad. Will I pay full price for it? Fuck no! Would I spend countless tokens on it if it was in an Arcade? Fuck yes I would! As a full priced retail title it is absolutely shit, but as an on-rails arcade shooter it really isn't all that bad.

And in my opinion, if you cannot get a reasonably clear idea of a game by reading previews, watching gameplay trailers, watching other people play the game on streams and reading reviews, then you need to learn to think and assess information provided to you. I'm sorry, but these days we have more information available on games before they have released than ever before and the information available to us is more than enough to form a reasonably accurate opinion on something before you play it yourself.

If I had to play every game in order to see if it was worth it or not, there would be absolutely no need for reviews or the like. If you cannot judge roughly what a game is going to be like before you play it, there is something seriously wrong.

That said, people have different standards. My standards are just higher than most and therefore I won't waste my time playing something that, by all indications, seems to be horribly mediocre.

I would have to agree with Wlad here and say that I loved Absolution as well. Certainly it had it's issues but was still a great game.

As for thief sadly you will probably have to find someone who has bought it and play it from them. Perhaps even rent it :)

I disagree with you. There is also nothing wrong with me. Different strokes for different folks. Let's just leave it at that.

As I said, we have so much info available to use before release, including being able to watch people actually playing the game. If you think that's not enough to make a reasonably accurate call on what the game will be like, then I don't know what more to say. Have fun then, I guess.

And as I said I disagree with you. I still feel you need to actually try something for yourself before you can have a valid, informed opinion on it. Sure, if you watch someone play it you can say it looks shit, but that doesn't mean it is shit. Like I also said, let's just leave it at that and agree to disagree.

You will never know how a game is until you play it. You absolutely cannot go on gameplay vids or reviews.
I wrote a blog about this and had a good few arguments with people on this forum a few years ago.
Case in point: Street Fighter 4.
Amazing game right?? High praise from every review I read, gameplay vids looked amazing! Plus its Street Fighter!
Bought it, played it, loved it for 2 days until the reality set in. Its a complete piece of crap. The xbox controller is terrible for this game. You need a fight stick. Also from after the second fight on normal difficulty or above the game starts throwing cheap shot after cheap shot at you that it just stops being fun. held onto the game for months giving it second chance after second chance looking for the brilliance everyone spoke of. Could not find it. Gave the game away.

You will never know how a game really is until you play it.

I have this on Pre Order and I am keeping my Pre order, Its something different and new and I really want to play the game. I won't bother with the normal difficulty settings, I'll be going for minimal hud and hardest difficulty AI. I'll let you guys know what I think :D

I completely agree with you here. For example Gothic 2 is one of my all time favourite RPG's even though it's average review scores were in the 60's, for me there we elements in the game that absolutely gelled with me.

So yes just because reviews say it's shit doesn't mean someone wont think it's brilliant. Unless it's Rambo the videogame, then I would have to question you mental well being. :P

Clive v Wlad!!! Sadly the match ends in a draw :(

WHAT!? thats like just your opinion man, I think Wlad won.

I actually do agree mostly with Wlad, you can kind of get an Idea what a game is like watching videos, but you truly don't know until you play it yourself. (Just my opinion as is most things stated on any forum)
